Job Description

The SCADA Engineer will own, maintain, and evolve a mission-critical SCADA system that remotely monitors and controls automated equipment deployed across industrial plants nationwide. This role focuses on SCADA design, implementation, and enhancement rather than PLC programming, and calls for a creative engineer who can hit the ground running, work independently with limited supervision, and take full ownership of problems from start to finish. The position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to sustainable water treatment and environmental innovation by improving system reliability, functionality, and safety.

Responsibilities

• Own the SCADA side of the overall control and monitoring system, focusing on remote monitoring and control of automated equipment rather than PLC programming.
• Maintain and enhance the existing SCADA platform so it continues to operate reliably and efficiently.
• Design and implement new SCADA functionality to support evolving business needs and operational requirements.
• Integrate new equipment and control skids into the SCADA system, ensuring consistent and accurate remote monitoring and control.
• Understand and manage how SCADA systems interact with databases and cloud-connected environments to keep data flowing correctly through the system.
• Collaborate closely with the controls engineering team to ensure SCADA functions align with PLC controls and skid operation, without writing ladder logic or PLC programs.
• Work in partnership with IT and database specialists to ensure data integrity, performance, and reliable communication between SCADA, databases, and cloud services.
• Apply knowledge of water treatment processes and instrumentation to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot SCADA-based remote monitoring and control systems.
• Brainstorm and propose creative solutions to technical challenges, taking ownership of issues from identification through resolution.
• Perform ongoing system maintenance, including updates, configuration changes, and improvements to support new equipment and future deployments.
• Monitor system performance and reliability, proactively identifying opportunities for optimization and risk reduction.
• Document SCADA system changes, configurations, and enhancements to support knowledge sharing and long-term maintainability.
• Participate actively in team collaboration, contributing ideas and technical insight to ensure the full system functions properly end-to-end.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 3-5 years of experience in the design and implementation of SCADA remote monitoring and control systems for automated controls equipment.
• Hands-on experience with SCADA systems, including configuration, maintenance, and enhancement of SCADA platforms.
• Experience with B&R Automation or with alternative SCADA platforms such as Ignition.
• Strong understanding of how data flows between systems and how SCADA systems interact with databases and cloud environments.
• Familiarity with databases and data integration in industrial control environments.
• Knowledge of water treatment processes and instrumentation, preferably in wastewater or industrial water treatment applications.
• Ability to work independently and with limited supervision while taking full ownership of technical problems end to end.
• Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to brainstorm and implement practical solutions.
• Comfort working in a collaborative environment, interfacing with controls engineers and IT/database specialists.
• Background in remote monitoring software, SCADA, HMI, and wastewater-related systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Ideal candidates bring a coding Background that supports SCADA configuration, scripting, or integration work.
• Familiarity with PLCs is a strong nice-to-have, particularly for understanding how SCADA interacts with PLC-based controls, even though this role does not involve ladder logic or PLC programming.
• Experience working with industrial plants such as paper mills, food processing facilities, or poultry plants is beneficial.
• Comfort operating within a small, specialized SCADA function where the engineer is the primary SCADA owner rather than part of a large SCADA team.

Work Environment

This role is almost entirely office-based, with very little to no travel to client sites, as field engineers handle on-site work and commissioning. The SCADA Engineer works in a collaborative environment alongside controls engineering and IT/database teams to ensure that cloud-connected systems, SCADA platforms, and databases all function together reliably. The company operates and monitors its own water treatment equipment at customer sites on control skids deployed nationwide, rather than selling equipment, and the SCADA system is central to remote monitoring and control of these assets. Team collaboration is important, and there is a strong preference for candidates who are local and able to be onsite five days per week, particularly at the start, as this is not intended to be a remote role.

The SCADA system is already functional but requires ongoing maintenance, enhancements, and support for new equipment and future deployments, creating a dynamic, growth-oriented environment rather than a static support position. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Longmont, CO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $58.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
