Job Overview

Scrapworks LLC is hiring a Scale Operator / Office Coordinator for our Port Arthur scrapyard. This is a customer-facing, front-office role responsible for operating the truck scale, processing customer payouts, managing yard paperwork, and serving as the central communication hub for the facility.

You'll be the first point of contact for customers and drivers — weighing loads, generating scale tickets, handling payments, answering phones, and keeping the scale house and office running smoothly. You'll also own document control for the yard: scanning, logging, and archiving delivery tickets, scale records, and mail. This role requires strong attention to detail, accuracy with cash and records, and fluent communication in both English and Spanish.

This is a full-time, six-day position (Monday–Saturday), with weekday hours of 7:30 AM–5:00 PM and Saturday hours of 8:30 AM–2:30 PM. It reports to the Operations Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Scale & Transactions

  • Operate the truck scale to weigh inbound and outbound vehicles and materials
  • Generate accurate scale tickets, applying correct material and grade codes in the computerized scale system
  • Direct customers and drivers to the correct unloading and drop-off areas
  • Maintain accurate digital and physical transaction records for every load

Customer Payouts & Cash Handling

  • Process same-day customer payouts by cash, check, or cash card per company procedure
  • Handle, count, and reconcile the cash drawer daily, ensuring balances are accurate
  • Maintain secure cash storage and follow all payout and reconciliation controls
  • Keep complete transaction and customer-identification records in line with Texas metal recycling requirements

Front Office & Communication

  • Act as the central communication hub for the yard, relaying information between customers, drivers, yard crew, and management
  • Answer, screen, and route incoming phone calls professionally in English and Spanish
  • Greet customers, answer questions on pricing, hours, and accepted materials, and direct commercial inquiries appropriately
  • Coordinate radio communication with yard personnel as needed

Documents & Recordkeeping

  • Scan, log, and archive delivery tickets, scale tickets, and daily paperwork
  • Receive, sort, and distribute incoming mail
  • Maintain organized, retrievable digital and physical filing systems
  • Support reconciliation of scale tickets and daily transaction reports

Office Upkeep

  • Keep the scale house and office clean, orderly, and presentable
  • Monitor and restock office supplies as needed
  • Support general administrative tasks for the facility as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • Prior cash-handling experience with accurate reconciliation
  • Prior office or administrative experience (recordkeeping, filing, phones, customer service)
  • Fluent in English and Spanish — spoken and written — for customer and phone communication
  • Computer proficiency: data entry, email, and basic office software (scale system training provided)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with numbers, cash, and records
  • Professional phone manner and customer-service orientation
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work a six-day schedule including Saturdays
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred

  • Scale operation or scrap/recycling experience (we will train the right candidate)
  • Familiarity with identifying and grading common ferrous and non-ferrous scrap materials
  • Point-of-sale or daily cash-reconciliation experience
  • Familiarity with Texas secondary metal recycling transaction and ID recordkeeping

Work Environment

  • Primarily scale-house and office based within an active scrapyard
  • Some exposure to outdoor conditions, noise, and dust; occasional walking on uneven terrain
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs occasionally

Compensation & Benefits

  • $13–$17 per hour, based on experience
  • Overtime available per FLSA
  • Health insurance (per company policy)
  • 401(k) with company match (per plan terms)
  • Paid time off (per company policy)
  • Safety bonuses and performance incentives
