Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Following established procedure, obtains blood, urine, and nasal specimens for clinical laboratory analysis. Evaluates and prepares blood and body fluid specimens for analysis and performs moderately complex testing procedures as directed. Prepares quality samples for delivery to the various clinical areas of the laboratory. Efficiently perform all computer functions necessary to process all patient information including accurate billing.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Demonstrates a positive, professional image when interacting with patients and staff. Responds to customer needs to meet their expectations.
  • Presents a neat and professional appearance compliant with structured dress code.
  • Attends all required annual review sessions and completes all competency training.
  • Verifies patient identity and performs phlebotomy services accurately and efficiently.
  • Performs venipunctures, arterial punctures, micro-collection techniques (i.e., finger and heel punctures) and other sample (blood and non-blood) collection procedures according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Properly obtains samples with the correct tubes or containers, and labels samples with collection time and initials. Correctly prepares containers for 24-hour urine collections.
  • Monitors proper collection of specimens for medical drug testing. Ensures appropriate chain of custody is maintained as necessary.
  • Performs glucose tolerance specimen collection according to approved procedure.
  • Prioritizes the workload for STAT and ROUTINE collection. Distinguishes testing performed STAT at Clinton laboratory (i.e., in-patient, ED, and infusion) for processing. Appropriately distributes specimens to Clinton laboratory techs.
  • Accurately and appropriately processes specimens for transport to Main laboratory for testing.
  • Properly prepares and mails various specimens (e.g., FedEx, US mail, etc.) as requested.
  • Performs computer functions necessary to perform tasks such as retrieval of patient data, registration, order entry, billing, diagnosis coding, and designating providers to receive copies of laboratory reports.
  • Correctly interprets physician orders, written and verbal, to ensure specimens are correctly collected. Contacts physicians, medical technologist, supervisor, or laboratory administrator with questions on testing or testing protocols.
  • Assists in training including with extern phlebotomy students as needed or directed by supervisor.
  • Follows up on errors and corrective action as needed.
  • Inventories and orders laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Monitors and operates a multi-line telephone system, directing inquiries to appropriate personnel, taking messages, and answering inquiries.
  • Must be aware of department and hospital policies, either by attending department meetings, reading the minutes, or review of hospital and department policies and procedure manuals.

Work Experience • See Education section. • Preferred - Experience performing phlebotomies on all age groups on an inpatient and outpatient basis within the last year. Education • High school diploma or G.E.D. • Successful completion of a formal phlebotomy education program, including externship. In lieu of education, at least 1 year of phlebotomy experience. Will accept proof of formal phlebotomy education and externship pending graduation. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Demonstrated knowledge of basic phlebotomy as related to laboratory testing performed. • A basic knowledge of clinical specimens suitability for testing. • Interact with communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers, and employees of other departments, doctors, doctors'' offices, visitors and patients. • Must be flexible to work varied shifts when needed. • Organize time to account for workload, priority, meetings and/or emergencies, and spend free time in a constructive manner. • Be able to work independently.
