Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Upon the request of the medical staff, sets up and operates the necessary equipment to provide optimal respiratory care to their patients. Is knowledgeable in the application and administration of various therapeutic and diagnostic procedures such as aerosol/IPPB therapy, ventilator support ECG, exercise ECG, Holter monitoring, Pulmonary Functions and pulse oximetry. Provides technical support to those staff members with a limited knowledge of respiratory care.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

• Explains purpose of and procedure for treatments, tests and equipment to the patient and their families.
• Administers various physicians prescribed therapeutic modalities that are considered routine to Respiratory Care and assesses their efficacy. These modalities include, but are not limited to, aerosol/IPPB therapy, incentive spirometry and oxygen therapy.
• Performs chest physiotherapy when so ordered including chest percussion (manual and/or mechanical), and postural drainage in order to mobilize secretions.
• Contacts, consults and works with all institutional departments and personnel, as well as attending and consulting physicians regarding the progress and care of patients.
• Performs various diagnostic procedures including ECG, exercise ECG, Holter monitoring, Peak Flowrates, Vital Capacity, Pulmonary Functions and Pulse Oximetry.
• Sets up, operates and monitors mechanical ventilator when a patient is unable to maintain adequate spontaneous ventilation. This includes assisting the attending physician in the selection of initial parameters based on patient size, clinical manifestations and ABG's, attaching patient to ventilator, setting appropriate alarm settings, recognizing the patients tolerance of mechanical support.
• Evaluates or analyzes the following test results: Pulmonary Function (spirometry flow-volume loops, VC, NIP), arterial blood gases and oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry by a Registered Pulmonary Function Therapist or a Certified Pulmonary Function Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
• Evaluates or analyzes the parameters of hemodynamic monitoring and understands their physiologic ramifications. Some examples are CVP, PAP, PAWP, and CO.
• Maintains permanent written legal record of all patient related activities that includes treatment given, patient tolerance of the procedure and response to the treatment.
• Makes regular rounds on all equipment in use such as oxygen delivery systems, CPAP/BiPAP and ventilators.
• Accepts verbal orders from physicians.

Job Requirements

General Requirements Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care. Licensed by the State of Michigan BLS for Healthcare Providers Certification. Work Experience None Education Completion of an AMA approved Respiratory program. Specialized Knowledge and Skills An in-depth knowledge of respiratory care techniques, ECG and hemodynamic monitoring. Able to update knowledge and skills as field requires. The interpersonal skills necessary to interface with departmental staff, medical staff, other hospital personnel and visitors. Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel programs. Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients serviced in his/her assigned service area as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training or experience.
