Summary

As an integral member of the Special Education Team, the School Adjustment Counselor maintains ongoing therapeutic support and outreach for Salem Prep High School students during the summer break. The primary goal of this role is to monitor student well-being, ensure continuity of mental health support, and preserve strong, supportive connections between students and the school community throughout the summer months

  • Summer Outreach & Check-Ins: Conduct regular individual check-ins with assigned students to evaluate their emotional, mental, and therapeutic well-being during the summer break.
  • Crisis Intervention: If needed, provide mental health support and crisis intervention.
  • Check-in with Salem Prep High School's principal as necessary.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required) Master's Degree preferred
  • Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Social Work
  • DESE Licensed or license eligible as a school social worker/school adjustment counselor
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in written format and ability to interact effectively with families, community members, collateral contracts, students and staff
  • Evidence of culturally competent counseling practices
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to triage/prioritize given competing needs, ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with the assessment and identification of students with disabilities under IDEA and knowledge of special education laws and regulations that govern the identification of children with disabilities.
  • General understanding of the legal requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Understanding of environmental factors that affect learning and social adjustment, including experience with working with students who have experienced trauma
  • Experience in conducting classroom observations and completing functional behavioral assessments
  • Experience working in a school environment
  • Bilingual (Spanish) skills preferred
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.

Work Year: This is a summertime position. Hours may vary.

Salary: $45.00 per hour (contractual hourly rate)
