Organization: High Country Community Health (HCCH) is a federally funded Community and Migrant Health Center. The mission of the HCCH team is to provide quality, patient-centered, culturally appropriate, affordable, and compassionate care that serves the whole person.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday during standard business operating hours. Travel will be required from school to school in his/her own vehicle. Schedule flexibility may be required based on organizational needs.

General Summary: A non-exempt position responsible for supporting school-based telehealth services by facilitating communication between patients, families, school personnel, and healthcare providers. The School-Based Medical Assistant serves as an essential link between remote providers, students, families, and school nursing staff to ensure efficient, high-quality, and patient-centered care delivery through telehealth technology and occasional use of mobile clinic unit.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Manage communication and scheduling between remote healthcare providers and school nursing staff utilizing the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Coordinate telehealth appointments and ensure all necessary documentation is completed prior to visits.
- Communicate with parents, guardians, and family members regarding telehealth and mobile unit visits, consent requirements, and follow-up needs.
- Review registration paperwork and verify patient demographics, insurance information, and consent forms for accuracy and completeness.
- Transport, maintain, and troubleshoot telehealth equipment at assigned school sites.
- Transport mobile unit as needed for in person visits and maintain equipment
- Set up and verify secure telehealth connections at each location prior to patient visits.
- Obtain and document vital signs according to clinical protocols.
- Reassess and document vital signs as directed by the provider.
- Assist remote providers during examinations by positioning cameras, utilizing examination tools, and facilitating patient-provider interactions.
- Accurately document patient information and visit-related activities within the EMR.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
- Clean, disinfect, and sanitize telehealth equipment between student encounters and between school sites.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure HIPAA compliance during all telehealth interactions.
- Coordinate follow-up appointments, referrals, laboratory testing, and additional services as directed by the provider.
- Report equipment concerns, technical issues, or workflow barriers to appropriate leadership.
- Support school-based health initiatives and outreach activities as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support clinical operations and patient care.
Requirements
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
- Current Medical Assistant certification preferred.
Performance/Experience Requirements
- Minimum one year of Medical Assistant experience preferred.
- Experience with telehealth services or school-based healthcare preferred.
- Knowledge of electronic medical record systems.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in remote and school-based environments.
- Ability to maintain professional relationships with students, families, school personnel, and healthcare providers.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care.
- Current BLS/CPR certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
- Valid North Carolina driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
