Newbury Elementary School is seeking a caring, collaborative, and student-centered School Counselor to join our incredible school community for the 2026/2027 school year.
The School Counselor is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive developmental school counseling program that supports students'' academic, social-emotional, and career development from PreK through Grade 6. The counselor collaborates with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners to promote student well-being, foster a positive school climate, and remove barriers to learning.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students'' social-emotional, behavioral, and academic needs.
- Deliver classroom lessons focused on social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, self-regulation, bullying prevention, digital citizenship, and college and career awareness.
- Conduct age-appropriate assessments of student needs and develop intervention plans.
- Respond to student crises and provide short-term counseling and referrals to appropriate community resources when necessary.
- Support students during transitions into school, between grade levels, and to middle school.
- Participate as an active member of the school''s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Student Support Team.
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to identify students requiring academic, behavioral, or social-emotional interventions.
- Assist in developing and monitoring intervention plans.
- Support attendance improvement efforts and identify barriers to regular school attendance.
- Participate in crisis prevention, response, and postvention planning.
- Build positive relationships with families to support student success.
- Consult with parents and guardians regarding student development, behavior, and available school and community resources.
- Coordinate referrals to outside mental health and social service agencies as appropriate.
- Facilitate family workshops and provide resources that promote student wellness and resilience.
- Consult regularly with teachers regarding classroom strategies that support students'' academic and social-emotional growth.
- Collaborate with school psychologists, adjustment counselors, special education staff, nurses, administrators, and related service providers.
- Participate in IEP and Section 504 meetings as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively to foster an inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive school environment.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with district goals.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with FERPA, state regulations, and ethical standards.
- Collect and analyze program data to evaluate effectiveness and improve student outcomes.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of counseling services, interventions, and referrals.
- Promote a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment for all students.
- Lead or support school-wide initiatives related to social-emotional learning, positive behavior supports, bullying prevention, and mental health awareness.
- Participate in school improvement initiatives and professional learning communities.
Required Qualifications
- Master''s degree in School Counseling or related field.
- Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) School Counselor License (PreK-8 or appropriate level).
- Knowledge of child development, counseling techniques, trauma-informed practices, and social-emotional learning.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with elementary-aged students.
Experience implementing a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model.
Experience with MTSS, PBIS, restorative practices, and culturally responsive counseling practices.
Knowledge of special education processes and Section 504 accommodations.
Dual certification as an Adjustment Counselor/Social Worker preferred.
