POSITION TITLE: School Counselor - Elementary

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold valid state licensure in school counseling

  • School Counseling experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated success in mediation & relationship building

REPORTS TO: Principal

OVERVIEW: Provides a comprehensive counseling program for students at the elementary level. Provides services to promote the personal/social, academic and career development of each student. Consults with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students' personal/social, academic, and career development; provides appropriate support to the total school program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions with the school community.

  • Implement the school counseling curriculum.

  • Establishes and maintains rapport with students and creates a supportive learning environment for all students that encourage social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation.

  • Instruct students in classroom counseling lessons as character building, relationships, and/or other related topics on a frequent basis.

  • Guide and counsel groups of individual students through the development of educational and career plans.

  • Counsel small groups and individual students to assist in problem-solving and decision-making of personal/social and academic development.

  • Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.

  • Refer students to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents.

  • Assist in the coordination and supervision of local and state testing for students.

  • Participate in building RTI & PBIS meetings.

  • Collaborate with district mental health counselors, school psychologist, behavior specialist and/or out of district agencies.

  • Supporting the overall district's educational program through general consultation activities and committee work.

  • Maintenance and transfer of cumulative records for current students and graduates.

  • Coordinate the master schedule with building adminstration.

  • Assist with the placement of students in appropriate educational settings.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of counseling services on a continuous basis.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.

  • Attend meetings and performs duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.

  • Assist administrators with the distribution and interpretation of standardized and local test scores for students and parents.

  • Attend IEP and 504 meetings according to caseload.

  • Serve on committees as assigned.

  • Duties as assigned by building principal.
