Duties

SCHOOL COUNSELOR

School Counselor Endorsement Required

Effective 2026-2027 School Year

Position Goal: To provide learning strategies and techniques that will help students overcome problems that impede learning and assist them in developing educational, occupational and life plans for their personal fulfillment.

The Guidance Counselor shall be responsible for the following duties and perform other duties that may be assigned by the administration

Superintendent/Board:

  • Observe and adhere to all Board of Education policies and regulations, and all administrative rules and procedures
  • Attend Board meetings when necessary to provide supportive materials and information
  • Follow all State of Illinois codes relative to the requirements of the Guidance program
  • Communicate Guidance program initiatives and objectives to the Administration, Staff and Community
  • Participate in networking with community organizations

Building:

  • Assume administrative and other necessary responsibilities in the absence of the Building Administration
  • Assist in the administration of the school testing program
  • Work and collaborate as a team member with Counselors, Social Workers and other specialists
  • Consult with staff, parents and community to familiarize them with the wide range of available services outside of the school setting
  • Maintain records and provide reports as requested by Building Administration
  • Oversee the maintenance of student records to protect their confidentiality
  • Assists in the development and/or implementation of special schools programs: e.g. Career Education Day, Drug Education, Sexual Abuse etc.
  • Utilize all possible resources for the betterment of services within the building
  • Examine the teaching and learning environment and make recommendations for the improvement of the educational plan
  • Attend case conferences and other staff meetings as needed
  • Participate in parent contacts as needed
  • Provide referral sources to parents as needed

Personnel:

  • Assist teachers in the development and incorporation of a continuum of guidance activities in their classroom
  • Provide consultation to teachers as requested
  • Consult with teachers to gain knowledge of their areas of concerns relative to students needs and their own needs and adapt/adjust the guidance counseling program accordingly

Students:

  • Provide direct service to all students individually, in classes, or small groups in order to assist students progress toward academic and personal success
  • Provide counseling services to help each student improve self-understanding, self-direction, problem-solving skills and decision making which all contribute to the student's positive self-image

Individual:

  • Exhibit confidentiality in relation to students, parents and faculty
  • Develop a positive working relationship with administration, staff, students and parents
  • Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth and development by attending meetings, workshops, conferences and continuing education classes as related to Guidance Counseling services and education
  • Remain current on effective teaching practices, techniques and learning strategies, literature, new research findings and technology, testing and data collection
  • Adhere to the new PERA law and Senate Bill 7 which describes the Illinois Learning Standards and requirements for good teaching
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the District Safety Plan

Qualifications

Valid Illinois Professional Educators License (PEL) with endorsement as School Counselor and experience related to children and family services.

Rate of Pay/Benefits: See attached salary schedule for the 2026-2027 school year as per the negotiated agreement. The position includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance benefits
