    POSITION TITLE: School Counselor TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: ES/MS - 10 months, HS - 11 months DATE: 5/25/23 DATE OF PREVIOUS REVISION: 2/4/2026 FLSA EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt PAY GRADE: Certified Scale

    JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, a School Counselor will plan, coordinate, and organize the delivery of programs and services to support and promote the cognitive, career, social, and personal development of all students in PreK through the 12th grade environment. This position will facilitate district programing to build and grow the comprehensive implementation of counseling programs while adhering to state and federal law.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    1. Implement and maintain a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, social, and emotional development for all students.
    2. Delivers a systematic developmental guidance curriculum and assists in the tailoring to school and/or student needs. Provides assistance to teachers, i.e. program development, and educating students.
    3. Provide training on topics such as but not limited to bullying, drug and/or alcohol abuse, college and career planning for staff, students, parents, etc.
    4. Collect and assess systemic program data, i.e. attendance rates, to identify needs and challenges.
    5. Develop and maintain a written plan for the effective delivery of the school counseling program on the North Carolina Comprehensive School Counseling standard course of study as well as individual school data.
    6. Serve as a liaison to students, parents, and other internal and external stakeholders to enhance their work and support of students.
    7. Administers small group counseling, short term individual counseling and referrals for long term support

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Accurately maintain school records, i.e. student information, as required by state or federal laws, and Union County Board of Education policies, and/or school-based request, and adhere to confidentiality requirements of state and federal law.

    3. Proactively and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders regarding programs, policies and procedures.

    4. Assess crisis situations and provide crisis intervention assistance.

    5. Interpret test data and other appraisals, i.e. aptitude test, appropriately and communicate to internal and external stakeholders in a timely manner.

    6. Work with referred students to implement strategies to overcome behavioral and emotional challenges

    7. Conducts goal setting and academic planning with individual student(s).

    8. Provide ongoing education to stakeholders such as but not limited to staff, students, parents, community members, regarding the school counseling programs and services, and student success standards.

    9. Effectively produces professionally written correspondence across various communication mediums, i.e. cell phone, computer.

    10. Performs other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Minimum Qualifications Desirable Qualifications Master's degree in school counseling North Carolina certification as a Counselor, Special Education Counselor, or Career and Technology/Vocational Counselor Three (3) to Five (5) years' experience as a Counselor in a public-school setting

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS WORK ENVIRONMENT: Sedentary/Medium - Exert force 10-25 lbs., frequently; and up to 10 lbs., constantly; or a negligible amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment.
