The School District of Tomahawk is seeking applications for a High School Counselor starting the 2026-27 school year.

The School District of Tomahawk is located in north-central Wisconsin, approximately 40 miles north of Wausau. The district serves the city of Tomahawk and the surrounding townships with an approximate population of 11,800 residents. Tomahawk is a friendly small town surrounded by more than fifteen lakes and flowages with thousands of acres of publicly accessible forests, offering many recreational opportunities. Tomahawk has a strong economic base provided by corporate businesses such as Packaging Corporation of America, Harley Davidson, and Louisiana-Pacific. There is also a strong small business presence in manufacturing, finance, hospitality and tourism, healthcare, service industries, and education.

Job Goal:

Promote and enhance the learning process for students through a combination of academic, social/emotional, and support career development following the Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model. Work collaboratively with other school staff, parents, and community agencies to provide support and deliver high-quality services for students in a variety of settings to help students achieve self-fulfillment and mature into responsible adults.

Performance Responsibilities:

Counseling:

a. Provide personal, educational, and career counseling to students in both individual and group settings.

Student Guidance/Advising:

a. Advise students in selecting academic programs for successful implementation of Academic Career Plans. Monitor students'' progress toward meeting graduation requirements, making necessary adjustments in their programs to meet those requirements.

b. Coordinate scheduling process for students.

c. Facilitate school orientation for incoming students by providing information on graduation requirements, course selection, educational planning related to post-secondary options, and extracurricular activities.

d. Provide test interpretation services to students and parents.

e. Ability to use data to assist in planning for closing the achievement gap.

f. Maintain open communications with college admissions personnel, military service representatives, and business and industry representatives to help provide students with current information.

g. Assist students and their parents/guardians with the procedures necessary to complete their post-secondary plans by helping them research options, complete applications, arrange school visitations, secure references, and apply for financial aid.

h. Be Knowledgeable of Xello, WICareerPathways, or other similar web-based tools for academic/career exploration and planning.

Consulting:

a. Serve as a member of the high school educational team by participating in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, student service teams, or other consultation meetings where student needs and programming are discussed.

b. Confer with parents/guardians, staff members, administrators, and other service professionals for the benefit of students.

c. Act as a referral source for students requiring special services offered through the school, such as special education services, at-risk programs, tutoring, etc.

d. Provide information regarding referrals to outside agencies when students require help beyond school-based services.

e. Act as a resource person in areas of staff development related to guidance, counseling, and Academic Career Planning.

Program Coordination:

a. Oversee and co-facilitate student testing services including the administering of achievement tests, placement exams, and interest and aptitude inventories.

b. Organize and administer student scholarship opportunities.

c. Serve as liaisons between instructional departments, school and district-wide committees, and the guidance department.

d. Review, select, and recommend appropriate and up-to-date resources for the guidance center.

e. Plan, develop, document, and oversee the implementation of all 504 plans.

f. Promote school and community awareness of available guidance and counseling services.

g. Be knowledgeable and serve as a co-facilitator of Restorative Practices and PBIS Frameworks.

Other:

a. Perform such other guidance and counseling-related tasks that may be assigned by the Building Principal and/or Director of Pupil Services.
