The School Counselor supports the mission of the Catholic school by promoting the academic, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being of students in grades 4K through 8. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, faculty, and administration to foster a safe, caring, faith-filled learning environment where every child is recognized as a unique gift from God.

Essential Responsibilities

Classroom Guidance

  • Plan and teach a weekly guidance lesson for each class from 4K through 8th grade.
  • Develop and deliver age-appropriate lessons that promote social-emotional learning, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, decision-making, digital citizenship, personal safety, and character development.
  • Integrate Catholic values and Gospel teachings into classroom guidance lessons when appropriate.

Student Counseling

  • Provide short-term individual counseling to students experiencing academic, behavioral, social, or emotional concerns.
  • Facilitate small-group counseling based on student needs, including topics such as friendship skills, grief, anxiety, emotional regulation, self-esteem, executive functioning, and social skills.
  • Identify students who may benefit from additional support and collaborate with families regarding referrals to community resources when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records while upholding professional ethics and student confidentiality.

Collaboration

  • Partner with teachers, parents, and school administration to support student success and well-being.
  • Participate in student support meetings and assist in developing intervention plans.
  • Consult with faculty regarding classroom strategies that promote students'' social-emotional growth.
  • Support school crisis response efforts as needed.

Student Leadership and School Climate

  • Develop and facilitate student groups that foster leadership, service, belonging, and positive peer relationships.
  • Promote a welcoming, respectful, and Christ-centered school culture.
  • Encourage students to demonstrate kindness, compassion, responsibility, and respect in their daily interactions.

Student Supervision

  • Provide recess supervision one day each week for primary and intermediate grade students.
  • Promote positive social interactions and assist students in resolving peer conflicts using restorative and developmentally appropriate practices.

Qualifications

  • Master''s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Wisconsin school counselor license or eligibility for licensure preferred.
  • Experience working with elementary and middle school students.
  • Knowledge of child development and social-emotional learning.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Commitment to supporting the mission, philosophy, and values of Catholic education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Catholic or faith-based school setting.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred, or willingness to support and uphold the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church.
  • Experience developing social-emotional learning curriculum and student support programs.
  • Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, families, faculty, and parish community members.
