Job Description

The City of Raleigh is seeking dedicated, community-minded individuals to serve as School Crossing Guards and help create a safe environment for students traveling to and from school. In this highly visible public service role, crossing guards provide traffic direction and pedestrian assistance at designated school crossings, promote safe crossing practices, and support the well-being of Raleigh's families and neighborhoods. Ideal candidates are dependable, attentive, and committed to public safety while delivering courteous service to students, parents, and the community.

This is part-time, seasonal non-sworn work while school is in session. Work involves directly assisting children crossing the streets and intersections at designated locations near public schools in the morning and afternoon. Tact and courtesy are to be exercised in dealing with the public. Work is reviewed by observation of results achieved and periodic on-site observation.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Use a stop paddle and/or pedestrian signal to stop traffic
  • Safely walk from one side of the street to the middle of the road regardless of width
  • Comprehension of traffic signs, signals, symbols, and basic traffic rules of the road
  • Be observant for unsafe traffic conditions and report them to the School Crossing Guard coordinator
  • Serve as a positive role model for students and provide information regarding school crossing safety issues

Typical Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; no previous experience required

Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic motor vehicle traffic and pedestrian laws
  • Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public
  • Working independently
  • Expressing oneself orally, adequately and effectively
  • Standing or walking for approximately one hour
  • Having good vision and being physically able to pull a child out of danger
  • Working in extreme outdoor conditions while carrying approximately ten pounds of equipment
  • Having adequate transportation to and from work assignment

Work Environment and Physical Effort:

Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of forcefrequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:

Work is occasionally performed in an office or similar indoor environment, on a construction site, or in a confined space. Work is frequently performed in an outdoor environment, in a street environment, in a warehouse environment, or with vehicles.

Work Exposures:

Work in this position does require frequent environmental exposures. Employees may frequently be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, individuals with known violent backgrounds, extreme cold, extreme heat, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. Work in this position may occasionally be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, and loud noises.
