School Crossing Guard

The City of Ypsilanti is seeking a School Crossing Guard!This is a responsible position which requires an individual who possesses the ability to amicably interact with children and have the ability to use good judgment while providing safe movement of the children to and from area school roadways or intersections.School Crossing Guards work approximately 2 to 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday, during the public school year (September through June). Specific hours will be set by the Police Administrative Services Manager and may vary according to demand and workload.DUTIESWatch for gaps in traffic and safely walk children across the roadway or intersections while holding a STOP sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching traffic.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESA High School Diploma or GED equivalent along with the ability, knowledge and skills to meet the following:Knowledge of how traffic signals functionKnowledge of basic safety practicesAbility to stand for 1 to 2 hour intervalsAbility to work under various weather conditionsAbility to follow oral and written instructionsMust have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with children, their parents and the general publicMust successfully complete a structured training program annuallyAbility to arrive at post on timeMust be able to pass an extensive background checkMay not have been convicted of an offense of a Class B misdemeanor or above within the last 10 yearsMay not have been, at any time, convicted of a felony or any family violence offensePHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
