SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST POSITION DESCRIPTION: Professional -Technical Level D Salary - $77,018 - $78,590 SUMMARY: The job of School Engagement Specialist is a case manager for the purpose of advocating for the individual needs of all at-risk students who are not in compliance with the Becca Bill; assisting school personnel in providing possible interventions and counseling for identified students; providing information about community resources to students, parents, and families; acting as a liaison between the school, home and court system; representing the District in King County Juvenile Court and documenting and providing reliable information that is used in a court of law, ensuring compliance with the Becca Bill and all other court orders. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Advises, parents, guardians, and students who meet truancy thresholds and those identified as chronically absent of Becca Bill guidelines for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, resolving conflicts, referring to appropriate professionals with the goal of enhancing student success in school. Assist with connecting to outside supports such as mental health, youth at risk (ARY), children in need of services (CHINS) petitions. Implement the Lake Washington School District attendance handbook for students who meet truancy thresholds and those identified as chronically absent. Facilitates school engagement learning for families, students, and staff Provide coordination of truancy assessments (tier-2) Case manage all students who are on a Truancy Petition, including working with school staff to provide consultation, progress updates and recommendations. Facilitates meetings with parents and students who meet truancy thresholds and those identified as chronically absent for the purpose of reviewing the student's truancy situation, proposing a variety of interventions and ensuring that outcomes achieve school, District and/or state objectives. Monitors and maintains various records, attendance files, etc. for the purpose of documenting and/or providing reliable information that may be used in a court of law. Participates in student reviews in court hearings for the purpose of maintaining up-to-date confidential court records. Prepares documentation (e.g. student progress, contacts with parents, teachers, outside professionals, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and recommendations and/or conveying information to the courts and District. Provides information to students, parents and/or guardians for the purpose of providing support under the Becca Bill guidelines in regard to attendance. Represents the District in King County Juvenile Court for the purpose of providing the district's intervention strategies in regard to the specific case and defending the District's actions. Supports other personnel (e. g. probation officers, police officers, intervention specialists, medical professionals) for the purpose of implementing court orders. Uses data to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and impact on student outcomes. Other job duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledgeable in trauma informed care practices attendance research, interventions, and supports. Effective interpersonal skills in communication, engagement, and team player in diverse population. Basic knowledge of computers, email and general business software programs. Good conflict mediation skills. Strong written and oral communication skills Ability to speak fluent English. Fluent Spanish speaking preferred Ability to work effectively with limited supervision. Ability to understand options within a system of policies and guidelines. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and solve practical problems. Ability to read, review and interpret highly technical information. Ability to effectively communicate essential information to appropriate parties. Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively. Ability to gather, collate, classify and analyze data. Expected to regularly upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. WORKING ENVIRONMENT The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.
