Position overview
We are seeking experienced, highly qualified FDLE-certified law enforcement professionals to serve as Certified Safety School Officers in Sarasota County schools. This role is ideal for active, retired, or former law enforcement officers who are committed to protecting students, staff, and school communities.
This is not a general armed security position. Applicants must already hold the required Florida law enforcement credentials or be clearly eligible to complete the applicable Florida Safety School Officer / School Guardian certification requirements.
Required certification and eligibility
To be considered, applicants must meet one of the following:
- Current or former FDLE-certified law enforcement officer with eligibility to serve in a school safety role
- Eligible to complete required certification through a Florida Sheriff’s Office or other authorized school safety training pathway, subject to approval and applicable requirements

Key responsibilities
- Maintain a visible and professional safety presence on campus
- Monitor and enforce school safety and security procedures
- Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, threats, and critical incidents
- Support incident prevention, threat response, and emergency preparedness efforts
- Build positive working relationships with students, staff, school leaders, and law enforcement partners
- Conduct drills, support safety training, and complete incident documentation
- Uphold school policies and all applicable safety requirements
Required experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in law enforcement, school safety, corrections, military police, emergency response, or a closely related public safety field
- Experience in armed security alone does not satisfy the certification requirement for this role
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Additional education or training in criminal justice, public safety, emergency management, or a related field preferred
Required skills
- Strong knowledge of public safety and law enforcement procedures
- Emergency response and crisis management experience
- Firearms proficiency and sound tactical judgment
- Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
- Clear written and verbal communication in English
- Strong judgment, professionalism, and report-writing ability
Additional requirements
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- Must pass a background check
- Must complete required drug screening
- Must pass required psychological evaluations
- Must be able to work onsite
- Must be able to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods indoors and outdoors
- Must meet all state, local, and school safety requirements
Equipment requirements
Candidates may be required to own or have access to standard duty equipment, including:
- Firearm, if required for the position
- Level III retention holster or duty belt
- Magazines and other required duty gear
