The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Floater provides nursing support services to students across multiple school sites within a district. This role involves traveling between assigned campuses to assist with student health needs, medication administration, chronic condition monitoring, emergency response, health screenings, and support for students with special medical needs. The LVN works under the supervision of a credentialed school nurse, registered nurse, or administrator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care and administer medications and treatments to students with acute and chronic health conditions in accordance with physician orders and district policies
- Monitor and support students with medical needs such as diabetes, asthma, seizures, allergies, feeding tubes, mobility assistance, toileting, hygiene, and other daily living activities
- Maintain accurate health records, medication logs, incident reports, and ensure confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA guidelines
- Conduct health screenings, respond to illnesses, injuries, and emergencies, and assist with communicable disease monitoring, immunization compliance, and campus health protocols
- Collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and healthcare providers while supporting IEPs, 504 Plans, staff trainings, and district-wide school health initiatives across multiple school sites
Required Qualifications- Current California LVN license in good standing, graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program, and current CPR/BLS certification required
- Must have a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, proof of insurance, and the ability to travel between school sites
- Strong communication, organizational, documentation, and teamwork skills, along with knowledge of pediatric care, medication administration, and school health practices
- Ability to work independently, assist students with mobility or physical needs, and support a variety of student health concerns
- Previous experience in schools, pediatrics, special education, or working with medically fragile students is preferred
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills, IV therapy or blood withdrawal certification, and experience with electronic health record systems are preferred
- Additional requirements may include First Aid certification, TB clearance, fingerprinting, background checks, seizure management training, diabetes care training, and medication administration competency verification.
