Through planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating preventive and responsive health practices, the School Nurse promotes the health and wellness of the entire school community. The School Nurse practices in accordance with School Nursing Standards of Practice, the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, and Branford Public Schools policies and procedures. Key Responsibilities:Clinical Practice and Student CareEstablish and maintain a comprehensive school health office in accordance with School Nursing Standards of Practice, the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, and district procedures and protocols.Provide episodic and emergency health care to ill or injured students, staff, and visitors.Assist students and families in achieving optimal wellness through health assessments, medical referrals, interpretation of medical data, and health counseling.Provide case management for students with special healthcare needs, including administration of medications and performance of specialized procedures according to medical orders and district policy.Develop and implement Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs).Develop and train designated staff on Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with potentially life-threatening conditions.Delegate healthcare tasks to health aides in accordance with district policy and the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act. Compliance, Reporting, and Health RecordsConduct state-mandated health and developmental screenings.Manage the student immunization compliance program.Maintain communicable disease prevention and control measures in accordance with state regulations, local health department protocols, and district procedures.Conduct communicable disease surveillance and required reporting.Document all student health information accurately in the electronic health record in accordance with department guidelines.Maintain and update school health records, including documentation of health office visits, physical examinations, and immunization data.Compile and submit required school health data for annual CSDE and DPH reporting.Serve as a Mandated Reporter for suspected instances of child abuse and neglect.Collaboration and Student SupportServe as a member of the interprofessional student support team to assess the impact of physical and mental health needs on learning and school participation.Develop and implement individualized health goals and interventions for students receiving special education services or Section 504 accommodations.Communicate with students and families in culturally responsive and health-literacy appropriate ways to provide information and resources.Promote health and wellness education by serving as a health information resource for students, staff, and families.Serve as a member of the school emergency preparedness and disaster response team.Pursue ongoing professional development in accordance with Section 10-212(d) of Connecticut Statutes. Education & Experience:Current Connecticut Registered Nurse (RN) license, or multi-state license per the Nurse Licensure Compact.Current CPR/AED certification required.Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.Minimum of one (1) year of RN experience; school nursing experience preferred.Experience working with school-aged children preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Proficient computer skills including word processing, email, and electronic health record data entry.Strong verbal, written, and nonverbal communication skills.Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA, HIPAA, and district policies.Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, administrators, teachers, and community health agencies.Ability to maintain emotional control and professional judgment in high-stress or emergency situations.Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. The employee will utilize standard medical clinic equipment including an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), adaptive equipment for students with special needs, and standard office equipment. There is potential exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. The employee must be able to maintain emotional control under stress and during emergency situations.
