About O-School

The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School (O-School) is a Therapeutic Day School serving K-12 students with diverse learning and social-emotional needs, including autism, anxiety, and mood disorders. We provide an individualized educational experience that integrates academics with therapeutic support in a structured, nurturing environment.

Our community serves up to 125 students and includes a Summer Program and Diagnostic Center. O-School is accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and aligns with established educational and clinical best practices.


Position Overview

O-School is seeking a compassionate and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to support student health and wellness in a therapeutic school setting. This part-time role partners closely with the Full-Time Nurse, Medical Director, and interdisciplinary team to deliver consistent, high-quality care.

This position is ideal for an RN who values a collaborative environment and is interested in working in a school setting. A willingness and ability to obtain an Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse endorsement is required.


Key Responsibilities

  • Administer medications and maintain accurate, compliant documentation
  • Provide nursing care for acute illness, injury, and chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes)
  • Support communicable disease protocols and overall student wellness initiatives
  • Serve as coverage for the Full-Time Nurse as needed
  • Maintain complete and compliant student health records in alignment with ISBE requirements and school policies
  • Support health-related components of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Communicate with families, school staff, and external providers, including the Medical Director and consulting clinicians
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to promote a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment
  • Participate in school community activities and interdisciplinary collaboration

Qualifications

  • Required:

    • Active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license
    • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant clinical experience
    • Experience in a school setting and/or pediatric behavioral health, child/adolescent psychiatry, or a related field
  • Licensure Requirement:

    • Willingness and ability to obtain an Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse endorsement within a reasonable timeframe
  • Preferred:

    • Prior experience in therapeutic day schools or special education settings
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic health/medical record systems

  • Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
