School Nurse
Scope of Responsibilities: The nurse provides health services and support to students who may have complex medical needs. Responsibilities include direct care, individualized health planning, medical evaluations, and collaboration with families and staff to promote student health, safety, and access to learning. The school nurse will adhere to Safe Practice and the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act.
Reports to: Woburn Public School Nurse Leader and School Principal
Performance responsibilities:
- Assess and evaluate the student's health and the impact of health problems on the student's educational progress.
- Utilize effective techniques to counsel students, parents, and school personnel and develop an action plan for eliminating, minimizing or accepting health problems.
- Assume a leadership role in the identification of students with health needs that interfere with effective learning.
- Using the nursing process, collaborates with the parent/guardian and student where appropriate, to develop and implement an individualized health care plan for the student.
- Coordinate health services with other health disciplines in order to fulfill a total health program such as programs for prevention and control of disease.
- Coordinate health services with community health programs.
- Observe school facilities and recommend modifications necessary to maintain optimum health and safety of students and school personnel.
- Respond to frequently encountered health and social issues, providing crisis intervention when required, including, but not limited to:
- Nutrition problems and eating disorders
- Juvenile Diabetes
- Responds to a child abuse and neglect issue (Mandated Reporter)
- Alcohol and drug use
- Teen pregnancy
- Death /Suicide
- Collaborate/cooperate with community providers and state agencies to meet the health, and social service needs of students.
- Organize, carry out, and report on the mandatory health screening programs and make appropriate referrals.
- Function as a resource to the student, parent, principal and teachers in matters pertaining to health.
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and ability to administer medications appropriately in keeping with school policy on administration of medication in the school, as well as adhering to MA Board of Registration in Nursing Medication Protocols.
- Provides medically prescribed interventions (while adhering to state regulations), and provides care to ill children on a daily basis.
- Assess family history and home situations which may affect a student's health via home visits when necessary.
- Maintain an accurate health record on each student.
- Screen all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws, and make recommendations for exclusion of students for lack of compliance.
- Recommend exclusion and monitor readmission to school for students with infectious or communicable diseases.
- Maintain first aid supplies and equipment in the Nurse's Office.
- Responds promptly to health emergencies
- Document all health related activity provided to students and staff in an Electronic Health Record (EHR), using SNAP computer program. Complete accident reports and worker's compensation claims (staff).
- Other nursing duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- CPR with AED certified by AHA or ARC
- A minimum of three years' employment as a Registered Nurse in Pediatrics, Community Health, or other relevant clinical nurse setting
Additional Qualifications: Must possess qualifications to be licensed as a school nurse by the Massachusetts Department of Education (DESE).
Terms of Employment: As outlined in the Agreement Between The Woburn Teachers' Association and The Woburn School Committee.
