Description of Work

The School Occupational Therapist evaluates, plans, and implements individualized treatment for students with functional limitations impacted by physical injury, illness, developmental disabilities, mental health conditions, sensory modulation dysregulation, or other psychosocial factors. Working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the school OT promotes recovery, independence, and safety.

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two), with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894, the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind education.

North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) operates per the academic calendar, from August to May, with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday afternoons. In general, support services and administration operate year-round.

***This is a full time, 10 - month position (off in June & July) that typically works Monday to Friday; eight (8) hour shifts. ***

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Job Responsibilities:

• Conduct comprehensive occupational therapy evaluations using clinical observation, standardized assessments, behavioral assessments, sensory testing, and functional evaluations.
• Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs and rehabilitation goals.
• Monitor student progress and modify treatment interventions as appropriate.
• Document evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge recommendations.
• Administer diagnostic tests and procedures appropriate to individual student needs.
• Interpret assessment results and formulate recommendation then communicate findings effectively to students, families, educational teams, and outside agencies.
• Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and provide interpretation of audiological assessment results and recommendations.
• Maintain accurate student records and program documentation.
• Prepare reports and documentation required for educational and related service agencies.
• Serve as a liaison among NCSD professional department heads and coordinates with internal teams such as Mental Health, Student Health Center, Management Team, and Residential Life. Additionally, the role collaborates with external agencies, including Vocational Rehabilitation, RHA Mental Health, Physical Therapy providers, and other contracted services as needed.
• Ensure compliance with students’ IEP transition plans and monitoring staff participation in required trainings, seminars, and professional development activities and communicates needs to NCSD staff, students, and stakeholders.
• Serves as a member of the NCSD Student Admissions Team, working collaboratively with Local Education Agencies (LEAs) within and outside of North Carolina. The role ensures that admissions decisions are made in accordance with Exceptional Children guidelines and are centered on each student’s best interest.

Management Preferences:

• Experience working in educational and/or residential settings serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Experience participating in IEP processes and multidisciplinary evaluations.
• Knowledge of classroom accommodations.
• Delivery of quality student support services in alignment with budgetary guidelines.
• Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, students, families, and community agencies.
• Experience with sensory modulation interventions and recovery-oriented programming.
• Experience designing adaptive equipment, splints, or assistive devices.
• Knowledge of restraint reduction and least restrictive intervention practices.

Required Education and Experience: Licensed to practice as an Occupational Therapist in the state of North Carolina.

Recruitment Salary Range $68, 500 to $88,373 (Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.)

This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.  Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
