SUMMARY: School psychologists use their expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. They conduct psychological evaluations to identify learning disabilities, provide individual and group counseling, and collaborate with families and teachers to create safe, supportive learning environments.
  • Campus-Based – responsible for testing, report writing, ARD attendance, counseling, and case management (sometimes). Also known as full-scope duties.
  • Evaluation Only – responsible for just testing/report writing. More sought-after position.
  • Counseling Only- responsible for counseling minutes only.

 

Core Requirements:
  1. Education: A minimum of a Specialist-level degree (Ed.S.) or a Doctorate (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) in School Psychology, typically requiring at least 60 graduate semester hours.
  2. Internship: A year-long, supervised internship of at least 1,200 clock hours, with at least 600 hours completed in a school setting.
  3. National Certification: Many states allow the National Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential as a "fast track" to state licensure.
  4. Examination: Passing the Praxis School Psychologist exam (Test code 5403).

 

State Specific Requirements:
  • Colorado (CO): Special Services Provider (SSP); Requires an SSP license from the CDE. Candidates must hold an Ed.S. or higher and have passed Praxis 5402/5403.
