Nature and Scope of Job: Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Security Officer is responsible for the overall safety and security of the school. The security team plays a critical role in the school's culture and climate. A calm, structured, and positive learning environment is top priority for the security team. The Security Officer is actively involved in the progressive discipline system and provides the first line of defense to defuse and de-escalate student misconduct and/or serious incidents. The Security Officer actively engages in teaching students the social skills necessary to be successful in the classroom and school community.
Responsibilities:
- Patrols and monitors the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies.
- Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
- Actively respond to incidents, fights or other issues in the school that threaten the safety of students, staff, and/or guests.
- Complete proper documentation related to incident reports and misconduct reports.
- Fulfill duties assigned related to Hall Sweeps.
- Maintains security records, logs and reports.
- As assigned, monitor the student entry and dismissal process to ensure safety.
- Build positive and professional relationships with students and leverage those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and common areas of the building.
- Supervises and directs pupil movement.
- Exercise dignity and respect when interacting with students at all times.
- Lead efforts to de-escalate inappropriate student behaviors and assist students with maximizing their time on task in classrooms.
- Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
- Notifies the administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
- Works with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations.
- Testifies in court and at School Board Meetings as required.
- Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.
- Supervises classroom behavior in lieu of faculty.
- Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by the school charter, state law and/or School Board.
- Reads and responds to email communications.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal, supervisor or other appropriate administrator.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Have a minimum of 5 years of highly successful related experience.
- Have knowledge of basic methods of providing site security and safety.
- Ability to work with students in maintaining a positive and safe school culture.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Proficient with teamwork and collaborating with colleagues and administration.
- Exhibit passion and the ability to thrive amidst change and challenging conditions while maintaining a positive outlook and forward looking perspective.
- Possess an attuned appreciation for cultural awareness and competency and a staunch commitment to continuously develop insight and proficiencies related to such matters.
- Demonstrated ability to keep up with fast paced environments and to multi-task.
- Sound judgment and ethical practice.
- Commitment to social justice and restorative justice practices.
- Strong oral communication skills, human relations and interpersonal skills.
- Impeccable attendance and punctuality.
- Wear proper business casual attire that conforms to the dress code.
- Submit a background check through the New Jersey Department of Education.
- Be CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogen certified or obtain certification upon hire.
- Complete a Tuberculosis test and physical and provide a physician's documentation of both.
- Be able to kneel, bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and carry children up to 70lbs.
- Have dependable transportation.
Pay Rate: $30 - $33 per hour
