Assignment Experience (What You Can Expect)

  • Support students with visual impairments across a variety of educational settings

  • Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments

  • Exposure to a variety of grade levels (PreK–12 opportunities)

  • 1–2 building placement when possible

  • Collaborative teams including Orientation & Mobility Specialists, Special Education Staff, Related Service Providers, and Administration

  • Opportunities to support students using Braille, assistive technology, and adapted materials

Your Impact as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired

You'll help students with visual impairments access their education, develop independence, and build the skills necessary for academic success and lifelong learning.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and consultative special education services to students with visual impairments

  • Conduct Functional Vision Assessments (FVA) and Learning Media Assessments (LMA)

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and accommodations

  • Teach Braille, assistive technology, compensatory skills, and other Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) areas as appropriate

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, families, related service providers, and school teams

  • Adapt instructional materials and classroom environments to maximize student access

  • Monitor student progress and maintain required documentation

  • Participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and multidisciplinary team planning

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education, Visual Impairment, or a related field

  • Valid Illinois Board of Education Professional Educator License with Visual Impairment Endorsement

  • School-based experience preferred, but newer professionals are encouraged to apply

  • Knowledge of Braille, assistive technology, and accommodations for students with visual impairments

  • Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills

  • Passion for helping students access their education and achieve independence
