Position Summary
The School Substance Awareness Counselor provides prevention, intervention, assessment, counseling, and referral services to students affected by substance use issues. This position works collaboratively with students, families, school staff, and community agencies to promote healthy decision-making, support student well-being, and help students overcome barriers to academic and personal success.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments and screenings related to substance use concerns.
- Provide individual and group counseling for students experiencing substance use or related behavioral challenges.
- Develop and implement prevention and education programs focused on alcohol, tobacco, vaping, and drug awareness.
- Collaborate with administrators, teachers, school counselors, nurses, and community providers to coordinate student support services.
- Consult with parents and guardians regarding student needs, treatment options, and available resources.
- Make referrals to community-based treatment programs and monitor follow-through.
- Maintain confidential records and documentation in accordance with federal, state, and district requirements.
- Participate in crisis intervention and student support team meetings as needed.
- Assist in developing policies and procedures related to substance abuse prevention and intervention.
- Stay current on evidence-based practices, trends, and legal requirements related to adolescent substance use.
- Attend occasional evening programs, parent workshops, community outreach events, and school functions as needed to support substance abuse prevention, education, and family engagement initiatives.
Requirements:
- Valid NJ certification as a Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC), School Social Worker, School Counselor, School Psychologist, or other appropriate educational credential required.
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or related clinical licensure preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in educational, behavioral health, or substance use treatment settings.
- Knowledge of substance use prevention, assessment, intervention, and treatment approaches.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and case management skills.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
- Experience working in a K12 school environment is preferred.
- Experience facilitating student groups and prevention programs.
- Training in trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, restorative practices, or related evidence-based interventions preferred.
