Position Summary

The High School Science Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based science instruction to students in grades 9-12. The successful candidate creates meaningful learning experiences that foster scientific inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application of scientific concepts. Through strong relationships, innovative instructional practices, and collaboration with students, families, colleagues, and community partners, the teacher supports all learners in achieving academic success and preparing for future pathways.

The ideal candidate embraces inquiry-based science instruction, promotes student engagement, utilizes data-informed instructional practices, and contributes positively to the culture and mission of the Hoquiam School District.

  • Participate in faculty meetings, school improvement initiatives, and district activities that strengthen school-community partnerships.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate Secondary Science endorsement(s).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a classroom and create a positive learning environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to integrate technology into instruction and classroom management.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license or ability to obtain one.
  • Successful completion of Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background clearance requirements.

Preferred

  • Advanced degree with emphasis in Science or a related field.
  • Previous successful experience teaching science at the secondary level.
  • Experience implementing Assessment for Learning practices.
  • Experience utilizing Response to Intervention (RTI) strategies.
  • Ability to converse in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to serving students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with school and district administration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong content knowledge in secondary science disciplines.
  • Understanding of inquiry-based instructional practices and student-centered learning.
  • Knowledge of assessment practices and data-driven instruction.

The employee is regularly required to communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and community members. The position requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, and movement throughout classrooms and school facilities. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Work is primarily performed in a classroom and school setting with a moderate noise level. The employee must be able to effectively supervise students in a variety of instructional environments.

Salary:

180 Base Salary = $62,462.04 - $121,525.75

4 Professional Days = $1,388.05 - $2,700.57

Benefits: State allocation towards dental, vision, medical insurance, retirement, 12 sick leave days, 3 personal leave days.

Employment is contingent upon successful clearance of a Washington State Patrol, FBI fingerprint criminal history background check, and Sexual Misconduct background check.
