Job Description:
The ideal candidate is an early-career structural biologist with strong, hands-on cryo-EM data-processing experience and enough scientific computing/programming proficiency to develop practical tools that improve and automate scientific data workflows.
The manager is prioritizing scientific and structural-biology depth over traditional software-development expertise; candidates should understand cryo-EM data and be comfortable working beyond basic GUI/tutorial-driven workflows, including command-line environments and high-performance computing (HPC).
Python is preferred, but other programming languages are acceptable. A recent PhD is ideal, although candidates with a master’s degree plus relevant experience will also be considered.
We are seeking a Scientist to develop robust, user-centered automation workflows for cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM) data processing, reporting, and scientific decision support.
This scientist will combine practical understanding of structural biology and cryoEM workflows with strong computational skills to leverage AI to reduce manual documentation, improve data traceability, and create standardized, reusable analysis tools.
Required qualifications:
Deep training in cryoEM data processing (single particle analysis, tomography or microED)
Familiarity with EPU and CryoSPARC software packages
Familiarity with working at the Linux command line to control data processing programs without GUIs
Experience developing scripts, data-processing pipelines, reports, or scientific visualizations
Strong documentation and reproducible-development practices
Solid record of scientific publications, presentations or technology innovation
Highly organized, with great attention to detail, strong communication and excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to work collaboratively with experimental and computational scientists
Preferred qualifications:
Experience in at least one programming language is preferred but not strictly required
Experience with version control (Git)
Ability to translate scientific user needs into practical software requirements
Experience with x-ray crystallography data processing
Experience with Relion, Pymol, ChimeraX, XDS, Refmac, Coot, or similar software packages
Must Have Skill Sets:
Deep expertise in cryoEM data processing (single particle analysis, tomography or Microcrystal electron diffraction (MicroED)) for structural biology applications
Experience developing custom data analysis pipelines utilizing scripting and multiple programs for cryoEM data analysis
Familiarity with working in high-performance computing clusters and at the Linux command line
Day to Day Responsibilities:
Meet with structural biologists to understand current workflows, identify pain points, and translate scientific needs into clear software requirements.
Develop, test, document, and maintain software tools to support structural biology experiments.
Implement reproducible software practices, including GitLab version control, code review, testing, dependency management, release documentation, and user instructions.
Validate tools against representative datasets; troubleshoot failures; and refine workflows based on scientist feedback.
Maintain clear documentation of assumptions, input requirements, limitations, data provenance, and expected outputs.
Present progress, tool demonstrations, technical recommendations, and concise literature or technology evaluations to scientific stakeholders.
