This is a high bench‑intensity laboratory role focused on developing, modifying, and creating new Hectorite products and related clay materials. The position applies principles of organic and inorganic chemistry to design, synthesize, and characterize advanced material modifications that support product innovation. The scientist will execute experiments, develop test methods, interpret data, and communicate results through reports and presentations, while maintaining strict adherence to HSE standards and safe laboratory practices

Job Description

Position Summary

This is a high bench‑intensity laboratory role focused on developing, modifying, and creating new Hectorite products and related clay materials. The position applies principles of organic and inorganic chemistry to design, synthesize, and characterize advanced material modifications that support product innovation. The scientist will execute experiments, develop test methods, interpret data, and communicate results through reports and presentations, while maintaining strict adherence to HSE standards and safe laboratory practices.

Responsibilities

Hands-on laboratory work to prepare Hectorite materials and related clay systems, including chemical modifications informed by organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Conduct full material characterization using appropriate analytical techniques.  Select or develop test methodologies to evaluate product quality, performance, and stability across relevant application systems.  Execute assigned research projects with high bench intensity, maintaining strong daily laboratory presence, rapid experimental turnaround, and consistent delivery of high‑quality data.  Present experimental data and interpretations at team meetings and stage‑gate reviews, including recommended next steps.  Document all laboratory work in accordance with internal standards and prepare concise technical reports or draft scientific publications.  Maintain a safe laboratory environment, participate in required safety training, and proactively identify potential hazards.  Use appropriate PPE and follow all HSE policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure compliance and safe operation.

Additional Job Description

Technical Knowledge and Skills

Working knowledge of (organic) chemistry.  Laboratory experience.   Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to collaborate. 

Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Master of Science (M.S) in Biology, Chemistry, or related scientific discipline.  

Experience: 0 – 2 years of work experience in the chemical industry is preferred. 

IT Skills: Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and Outlook email communication

Language Skills: English.  

Working arrangements: Full time, site based at SciPark, East Windsor, New Jersey.  

Traveling required: None.  

Hazmat certification course: Provided by Elementis annually

Material handling: Must be capable of regularly lifting, moving, and working with 5‑gallon pails of materials safely and efficiently, following proper ergonomic and safety procedures.
