Position Overview This is a skilled position involving control and operation of the screed on the asphalt paving machine. A thorough understanding of all aspects of the paving industry is required, including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction, and other details related to asphalt paving.

The operator will:

  • Control material taken into the paver.
  • Control the depths of material distributed through the machine.
  • Lead in planning out the job (walking and marking plan with foreman or paver operator).
  • Measure out the passes.
  • Determine the yield of a truckload of material.
  • Communicate with the paving operator to keep the pace of the job steady.
  • Monitor mat edges, joints, and other aspects of job quality.

Location & Travel

  • Homebase: Eugene, OR.
  • Must be willing to travel as needed for business demands.

Shift

  • Days, nights, weekends.
  • Varies based on business demands.

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a current member or able to join Operators 701.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • At least 1-2 years previous experience in construction, specifically in paving equipment operations, or related education/experience.
  • Must have knowledge of proper equipment operation, grade, and work operations.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical exam and pre-employment controlled substance testing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and nights as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to conform to and maintain OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and all other company or state rules and regulations.
  • Must have current US Authorization to work or ability to obtain without company assistance prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid CDL License.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Operate Roller, Paver, Screed, Blade, Loader, Backhoe, or other heavy equipment.
  • Load and unload equipment and secure equipment on trailer.
  • Assist labor crew including shoveling, raking, and compacting of asphalt materials.
  • Routinely assist other members of the workforce in different areas of production.
  • Promptly communicate with supervisors on any flaws in material.
  • Take action to avoid potential hazards or obstructions.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned to meet business needs.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Participate in and promote an inclusive work environment.

  • Please provide your own pair of steel-toed boots.
  • Job requires the following motions: bending, hammering, stooping, pushing, pulling, squatting, throwing.
  • Walking and standing occupy most of the work day.
