    Job Description

Every day, hundreds of millions of customers come to Amazon Search looking for something, sometimes they know exactly what they want, sometimes they"re just browsing. The Search Experience team at Amazon Shopping builds the visual discovery experiences that bridge that gap. We design and ship interactive product grouping widgets - curated collections, shoppable style carousels, and themed showcases - that surface the right products in the right context, at the right moment. Our features are rendered billions of times daily on one of the highest-traffic pages on the internet, directly driving engagement and purchase decisions. We operate at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, applied science, and rapid customer-facing experimentation.

Our team is looking for a Software Development Engineer who is excited to build things customers see and use every day. In this role, you will design, build, and ship customer-facing discovery features at massive scale. You"ll work closely with applied scientists, product managers, and UX designers to take ideas from conception through experimentation to production. Your code will directly impact how customers discover products.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Design and implement scalable services that power customer-facing discovery widgets, handling billions of daily impressions
    • Build data pipelines and integrations to source, rank, and render product groupings in real time
    • Partner with applied scientists to integrate ML models into production serving systems
    • Write high-quality, well-tested code and participate in design and code reviews
    • Own and operate your services - contribute to operational excellence, monitor health metrics, and participate in on-call rotations
    • Run and analyze A/B experiments to measure customer engagement and revenue impact
    • Collaborate cross-functionally with science, product, and UX teams to define and deliver new features
    • Collaborate with partner teams to unblock their integrations, reduce friction in the development workflow, and ensure their changes meet platform standards

    A day in the life

You might start the morning reviewing metrics from a recently launched experiment on a new widget layout. Mid-morning, you pair with a scientist to design the API contract for a new ranking signal. After lunch, you"re writing a design doc for a new discovery experience variant, getting feedback from your tech lead. Later, you debug a latency regression in the rendering pipeline, push a fix, and verify the improvement in production. You end the day reviewing a teammate"s code and discussing architecture trade-offs for an upcoming feature.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
