General Description

Responsible for performing maintenance work of animal exhibits and live animal care and rehabilitation.

Examples of Duties

• Cleans cages, pens, yards, transport cages, displays, aquaria, and incubators for all animals and birds.
• Feeds and waters exhibit animals and birds. Picks up food and processes carcasses for feed.
• Exercises animals and handles animals as needed for education programs.
• Administers daily care to sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife, including dispensing medicine.
• Repairs and maintains holding facility and display construction.
• Oversees onsite animal care volunteers and interns; oversees cashiers and maintenance persons in Observation Building.
• Maintains records and files of animal husbandry.
• Presents wildlife interpretation and education tours and programs utilizing live animals, taxidermy mounts and skins, slides, films, etc.
• Follows all policies, procedures, and the philosophy that is set forth by the City of Green Bay Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

• Two years of course work at a college, university, or technical school in Zoology or closely related field.
• Experience in Farm or 4H courses and projects desirable.
• Valid drivers license and good driving record.

A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Some knowledge of principles and practices of animal husbandry and skill in handling animals.
• Some skills in directing volunteer workers.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish effective relationships with staff, volunteers, and general public. Ability to work the required hours of the position.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform the following activities:

• Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
• Frequent walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, crouching, and kneeling.
• Occasional sitting, climbing, pushing, and pulling.
• Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
