Job Overview

The Fabrication Shop Assistant supports the fabrication team by installing custom wiring for special float features, building scenic elements, and fabricating assemblies for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade floats and other custom projects. This hands-on role contributes to the creation of unique parade elements while maintaining attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and safety standards. The position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with experience or interest in electrical work, scenic construction, or fabrication to develop their skills in a collaborative, fast-paced creative environment.

What You Will Do

• Assist in the construction of scenic elements, set pieces, parade floats, and custom installations.
• Assist with the installation of custom AC and DC wiring for motors, controllers, lighting, sound systems, and power distribution equipment.
• Operate woodworking and fabrication equipment, including table saws, sanders, drills, and other shop tools.
• Measure, prepare, and cut wood and metal materials based on shop drawings and specifications.
• Assist with loading, unloading, packing, and transporting materials, equipment, and finished components.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including tool and inventory management.
• Follow all safety procedures and promptly report equipment, maintenance, or safety concerns.
• Participate in on-site installations, event setup, and strike activities as needed.
• Provide support to other fabrication disciplines as needed, including carpentry, welding, mechanical assembly, CNC machining, sculpture, and paint.
• Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
• In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.

Skills You Will Need

Electrical & Fabrication Skills: Knowledge of AC/DC electrical wiring, power distribution, and fabrication techniques, with the ability to install wiring, assemble components, and support the construction of scenic elements, parade floats, and custom installations.

Tool & Equipment Operation: Proficiency operating hand and power tools, woodworking equipment, and fabrication machinery, including table saws, miter saws, sanders, drills, and related shop equipment.

Technical Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, scale models, and fabrication specifications to accurately measure, prepare, cut, and assemble materials.

Safety & Quality Focus: Commitment to following safety procedures, maintaining an organized work environment, identifying potential hazards, and producing high-quality work with strong attention to detail.

Collaboration & Adaptability: Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, support multiple fabrication disciplines, and assist with on-site installations, event setup, and strike activities as needed.

Preferred Specialized Skills: Experience in scenic construction, welding, CNC machining, scenic painting, mechanical assembly, or other related fabrication disciplines.

Who You Are

• Candidates with a High School diploma or equivalent are encouraged to apply.

• This position requires heavy lifting, constant moving, remaining in a stationary position, and reaching with arms and hands. Involves remaining in a stationary position for at least two consecutive hours, lifting at least 50 lbs. stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders. May involve reaching above eye level. Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

• Able to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays (Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving Eve), based on department and company needs. Willing to work overtime to meet deadlines.
