Description

Are you interested in making a direct impact in climate resilience? Do you love working outside in parks or do you have a passion for native plants? The Critical Projects Stormwater Team oversees the maintenance of over 400 stormwater facilities. The team is responsible for the non-structural maintenance of various types of stormwater facilities, including bioretention facilities, rain gardens, dry ponds, wet ponds, sand filters, infiltration trenches, and bioswales.

The typical maintenance work includes weeding of vegetated facilities, planting of new facilities and supplemental planting of existing facilities; mowing the embankment of ponds, keeping control structures free of trash and debris, removing the vegetation growing on sand filters and on stone or gravel infiltration facilities, collecting trash from all facilities, removing accumulated sediment, and performing erosion repairs.

The successful candidate will be able to perform the activities with minimal supervision and actively reporting to the team leader. Additional skills include operation of vehicles, specialized landscape equipment such as string trimmer, backpack blower, etc. and utilizes a variety of hand and power tools used in gardening and landscape maintenance work, performs preventative maintenance and minor repair on equipment. Preferred candidates with knowledge of principles of stormwater management including types of stormwater management facilities, basic design principles, and routine maintenance tasks.

Examples of Important Duties

• Performs stormwater facilities preventive maintenance according to the Department of Environment Protection standards.
• Maintain bioretention and rain garden facilities with healthy vegetation and free of weeds.
• Operates various hand and power tools and walk-behind mowers and riding mowers.
• Perform routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Demonstrates safe working practices and use of personal protection equipment including eye protection, hearing protection, work gloves and steel-toed boots.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must possess a valid Driver's License and qualify to drive Commission vehicles to locations within Prince George's County.
• Two years of experience in grounds keeping, building maintenance, or park maintenance.
• Ability to read and write.
• Pass Commission medical examination.

Important Skills and Characteristics:

• Knowledge of groundskeeping, landscaping, and park general maintenance operation, safety, turf maintenance, work with pesticides and pesticide safety, basic vehicle and equipment maintenance, cleaning agents and cleaning procedures and Commission organization, policies and procedures*.
• Skill in operation of hand and power tools, riding mowers, tractor with attachments and trucks and/or truck trailer combinations.
• Ability to understand a system of procedures, read and understand labels, read and write routine reports and emails, provide courteous service.
• Developed primarily after employment in this job class.

Working Conditions:

Primarily works outdoors. Work conditions may include exposure to dust, vibration, noise, chemicals, dirt, waste, odors, pesticides, wildlife, potential harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.) as well as exposure to adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, etc.). The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, googles, gloves, or full personal protection equipment. Work requires constant bending, lifting, and carrying heavy objects of up to 50 pounds. An essential employee for on-call 24 hours for emergencies. Regular work hours are 6:00 am to 2:45 pm Monday - Friday, but employee may be required to work some evenings and weekends.

Health Insurance Plans

You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
