Examples of Duties
Essential Job Functions
- Follow the directives and procedures of American Red Cross (ARC) courses including conducting course in accordance with ARC policies and requirements.
- Conduct course in a manner that helps participants to stay engaged in the learning process and meet course objectives with instruction delivered with quality, consistency, and standardization.
- Monitor participants' practice, evaluate performance, and provide corrective feedback and encouragement that is consistent with skill assessment tools.
- Use skill assessment tools as criteria for ascertaining the proficiency of performance.
- Maintain and provide complete and accurate records and reports of ARC as well as Appleton Parks and Recreation documents.
- Manage and supervise assigned facility during work hours (including but not limited to security, cleanliness, and safety).
- Provide high level of leadership and serve as a positive role model for participants.
- Initiate communication regarding any concerns (safety, class conduct, participant proficiency, etc.) to Recreation Supervisor.
- Perform set-up and take-down of program related equipment.
- Assist with ARC aspects (online course work, registration, certification, etc.) if questions arise.
Other Job Functions
- Maintain inventory and condition of supplies and equipment.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with participants and management staff.
- Complete American Red Cross required updates of certifications.
- Attend all required staff trainings and meetings.
- Work closely with the Parks and Recreation Department staff to ensure all department rules and policies are observed.
Typical Qualifications
- Current Lifeguard Instructor certification.
- Current Lifeguarding/ First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.
- Ability to supervise staff.
- Ability to effectively coordinate and direct the overall class during lifeguard course.
- Ability to enforce City of Appleton policies and procedures.
- Ability to take direction.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Effective decision-making skills.
