Description / Position Overview

SEASONAL - Wildfire Mitigation Technician

In this position, you will perform forestry and maintenance tasks for the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) Wildfire Mitigation Section.

This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Workers Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association).

We will be hiring eight (8) positions. Approximate dates of employment are from May through November. Normal work hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., four (4) days per week (some nights and weekends depending on department needs). Total hours worked not to exceed 1,500 annually.

Essential Functions:

  • the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:

• Provide support to the CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section's Neighborhood Chipping Program by dragging brush, feeding a woodchipper, sweeping and raking leaf litter, pine needles, and woody debris (this is the primary duty for this position) • Perform hazardous fuels reduction projects in the City of Colorado Springs' Wildland Urban Interface as needed • Maintain station facilities (clean bathrooms, sweep/mop, and perform lawn care) • Provide basic maintenance on equipment; properly and safely used assigned vehicles, forestry equipment, and power tools • Provide logistical and clerical support, and communicate with the public in the event of a wildfire

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Knowledge of:

  • Safety programs
  • Forestry equipment
  • Modern office technology
  • Microsoft Word and Excel

Ability to:

  • Safely operate and maintain small hand tools and power equipment such as leaf blowers, woodchippers, brush cutters, chainsaws, trimmers, pruners, mowers, and other section equipment as needed
  • Safely operate assigned City vehicles, including dump trucks and trucks with trailers
  • Follow oral and written directions and work as part of a crew
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Work in extreme weather conditions (primarily the heat)

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges

Preferred Qualifications:

Specialized college level coursework in natural resource management, fire science, forestry, or a related field Wildland Fire Training (NWCG S-130/190 or Red Card)

Additional Information:

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and walk on uneven terrain, steep slopes, and rocky conditions.
