Position Summary

St. Paul''s Lutheran Church & School is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Second Shift Custodian to help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, church members, and visitors. This position is primarily responsible for the daily cleaning and sanitization of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and common areas after school hours. The custodian will also complete assigned work orders, monitor building conditions, secure the facility at the end of each shift, and report maintenance or safety concerns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Custodial

  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, stairwells, and common areas.

  • Sweep, vacuum, dust mop, wet mop, and disinfect assigned spaces.

  • Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the facility.

  • Replenish restroom and custodial supplies.

  • Clean glass, drinking fountains, doors, and other high-touch surfaces.

  • Operate custodial equipment including auto scrubbers, vacuums, backpack vacuums, and floor machines.

  • Perform floor care including spot mopping, auto-scrubbing, and periodic carpet cleaning.

  • Maintain custodial closets and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe manner.

Work Orders & Building Support

  • Complete assigned work orders within established timelines.

  • Assist with minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs, ceiling tiles, air filters, and door hardware.

  • Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment for school and church activities as assigned.

  • Assist with seasonal cleaning projects during school breaks.

  • Assist with seasonal tasks such as salting and snow removal

Building Monitoring & Security

  • Conduct routine walkthroughs of the building throughout the shift.

  • Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or building concerns to the Facilities Manager.

  • Ensure classrooms, offices, and common areas are properly secured at the end of the day.

  • Monitor building alarm systems and follow established procedures for arming the facility at the end of each shift.

  • Respond appropriately to alarm notifications or emergencies while on duty.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Previous custodial or commercial cleaning experience preferred but not required.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Good communication and customer service skills.

  • Basic computer or mobile device skills for completing work orders.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a school environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and reach throughout the workday.

  • Push and pull custodial equipment and loaded carts.

  • Safely operate cleaning equipment and power tools as needed.

  • Work in varying temperatures and environments throughout the facility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a school, church, healthcare, or commercial facility.

  • Experience operating floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, and other custodial equipment.

  • Familiarity with computerized work order or facilities management systems.

  • Knowledge of proper cleaning procedures, chemical handling, and OSHA safety practices.
