MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Educational Leadership, Educational Administration, or a closely related field.
Must hold or be eligible for educator licensure and certification in Delaware as School Principal and Assistant School Principal (Del. Administrative Code 1591).
Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience in public education, including classroom teaching experience.
Demonstrated leadership experience in a school setting through formal or informal leadership roles.
Knowledge of effective middle school instructional practices, student behavior management, MTSS, and positive school climate initiatives.
Experience utilizing student achievement, attendance, and behavioral data to support decision-making and continuous school improvement.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and model professionalism and ethical leadership.
Must be available to work beyond the regular school day, including evenings and other nontraditional hours, to fulfill administrative responsibilities and provide leadership at school and district events.

OVERVIEW: The Assistant Principal serves as a collaborative member of the school's leadership team and plays a vital role in creating a safe, positive, and student-centered learning environment for students in grades 5-8. Working closely with the Principal, the Assistant Principal provides leadership in fostering a positive school culture and climate, promoting student accountability and success, supporting staff, and ensuring the effective day-to-day operation of the school. This position is responsible for leading student discipline and behavior support systems, strengthening relationships with students and families, coordinating school operations, and helping ensure a safe and orderly learning environment where every student can thrive. The Assistant Principal also supports the school's instructional program by supervising and evaluating assigned instructional staff through the Delaware Teacher Growth and Support System (DTGSS), providing meaningful feedback, and collaborating with the Principal to advance continuous school improvement. The successful candidate is a highly visible, relationship-driven leader who demonstrates integrity, sound judgment, exceptional organizational skills, and a steadfast commitment to fostering a culture of accountability and high expectations for all students and staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the implementation of district instructional initiatives and continuous school improvement efforts.
- Serve as a Learning-Focused Schools (LFS) instructional leader by supporting implementation of the district's instructional framework and participating in required professional learning.
- Conduct regular classroom walkthroughs utilizing the district's instructional observation system to monitor instructional practices, provide feedback, and support continuous improvement.
- Participate in district and state leadership development and administrator mentoring programs to support continuous professional growth.
- Serve as the school's Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Coordinator by leading the implementation of school-wide SEL initiatives, supporting student wellness, coordinating interventions, and collaborating with staff and families to foster a positive school climate.
- Build strong, respectful relationships with students, staff, families, and the community through visible, approachable, and responsive leadership.
- Lead student discipline and behavioral support systems using progressive interventions and consistent implementation of the Student Code of Conduct.
- Promote positive student behavior, regular attendance, and student success by implementing proactive behavioral supports, recognition programs, and school-wide academic and behavioral initiatives.
- Support students' social, emotional, and behavioral needs by collaborating with counselors, special education staff, intervention teams, families, and community agencies.
- Assist in the daily operation of the school, including supervision, transportation, arrival and dismissal procedures, student activities, school events, and other operational responsibilities.
- Help ensure a safe and orderly learning environment by coordinating school safety procedures and emergency preparedness efforts.
- Supervise and evaluate assigned instructional staff in accordance with the Delaware Teacher Growth and Support System (DTGSS), providing meaningful feedback that supports professional growth.
- Collaborate with the Principal to advance instructional priorities, implement district initiatives, and support the achievement of school goals.
- Analyze student behavior, attendance, and other school data to identify trends and implement strategies that improve student outcomes.
- Coordinate student scheduling, placement, residency verification, and other student support services to ensure appropriate educational programming and compliance with district procedures.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and annual review of school procedures, including the Student and Staff Handbooks, School Safety and Crisis Management Plan, and other school operational protocols.
- Coordinate and support state and local assessment programs, including testing logistics, data management, reporting, and compliance with district and state requirements.
- Coordinate student intervention services, alternative education placements, and summer school programming in collaboration with instructional and student support teams.
- Coordinate the scheduling, assignment, and management of substitute teachers to ensure continuity of instruction and daily school operations.
- Collaborate with the School Resource Officer and school leadership to promote a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment.
- Support the planning, facilitation, and follow-up of administrative, department, and team leader meetings to advance school initiatives and organizational effectiveness.
- Support the planning and implementation of school fundraising activities, student events, and other programs that enhance school culture and community engagement.
- Foster open, timely, and professional communication with students, families, staff, and community partners to strengthen relationships and support student success.
- Demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical leadership in all aspects of the position.
- Provide administrative coverage and visible leadership for school-sponsored events and activities, including athletic events, performances, dances, awards programs, parent meetings, and other evening or weekend functions as assigned.

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is a full-time, 12-month administrative contract position. Salary is based on the Delmar School District state and local salary scales for an Assistant Principal.
