Secondary Science Teacher - South Lake High School

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with DX, DI, or appropriate certification Code(s)
  • Recent experience or coursework related to instructional practices.
  • Strong organizational skills with a creative and energetic approach to teaching.
  • Comfortable using digital tools and technology in the classroom.
  • Demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment.
  • Other qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent or designee.

Reports to: Principal

Performance Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement engaging, standards-aligned science instruction that promotes inquiry, critical thinking, and real-world application across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive classroom and laboratory environment by consistently modeling and enforcing proper safety procedures.
  • Exhibit strong self-efficacy by taking ownership of student outcomes, advocating for learners, working efficiently, and maintaining confidence in both personal and student success.
  • Assess and record students' progress regularly, providing timely feedback and maintaining accurate academic records.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and administrators to support student success and program development.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, academic performance, and classroom inventory.
  • Stay current with industry trends, tools, and instructional strategies through ongoing professional development.
  • Engage in school and district initiatives by participating in committees, professional development, community events, and all required student support meetings, including IEP, 504, and Student Study Team meetings.
  • Implement Restorative Practices to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and foster a supportive and respectful classroom and school culture.
  • Design and deliver individualized, engaging lesson plans that promote curiosity and align with students' learning levels and goals.
  • Measure progress and accomplishments of students towards their academic achievements on a regular basis and provide access to real-time progress reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of accidents, incidents, and other significant events in compliance with licensing requirements and District policies.
  • Exercise open, respectful, and frequent communication with families, co-workers, supervisors, and other school staff.
  • Implement and uphold district, school, and administrative policies with consistency and integrity.
  • Discipline students (according to school/district policy) when necessary and communicate discipline with parents/guardians.
  • Report suspicions of neglect, abuse etc. as required by Board Policy and the State of Michigan.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward student learning, teaching practice, and personal/collective professional development.
  • Understand and implement Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) in relation to academics, behavior, and social emotional needs.
  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners to enhance student achievement and support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
  • Implement opportunities for students to apply their learning beyond the classroom, fostering global competence and positive impact on their families, communities, and the wider world.
  • Implement all requirements outlined in students' IEPs, 504s, Health Plans, and Behavior Intervention Plans with fidelity and attention to individual needs.

  • Ability to participate in meetings, professional development activities, parent conferences, and school events, which may occur outside the regular workday.
  • Ability to travel within and outside the district as required for professional development, meetings, field trips, and other school-related activities.
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance and be present at assigned work locations as required.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position. Work is performed primarily in a classroom and school setting with moderate to high noise levels and frequent interruptions. The position requires regular interaction with students, staff, parents/guardians, and community members. Duties may include indoor and outdoor supervision in varying weather conditions. The position may require flexibility in scheduling, including occasional evenings, weekends, and participation in school-sponsored activities and events.
