Overview
The Secondary Mathematics Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-aligned math instruction in a 100% virtual environment. Holding a valid Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) license with a 5-12 Mathematics endorsement (e.g., Endorsement 143), this educator will translate complex mathematical concepts, from foundational algebra and geometry to advanced calculus and statistics, into accessible, engaging digital formats. The teacher will manage online curriculum implementation, facilitate both synchronous virtual problem-solving sessions and asynchronous coursework, and proactively monitor student performance data to provide highly individualized interventions that build mathematical fluency 

Essential Duties

  • Instruction and Curriculum Delivery
    • Deliver core secondary mathematics instruction ranging from Algebra and Geometry to advanced coursework in a fully online environment utilizing both synchronous live virtual sessions and asynchronous self paced digital modules teaching methods
    • Adapt and augment standardized online math curriculum to ensure strict alignment with the Iowa Core Mathematics Standards focusing on procedural fluency conceptual understanding and real world application
    • Design and facilitate interactive live sessions utilizing digital tools such as digital whiteboards graphers including Desmos and virtual manipulatives to model step by step mathematical problem solving
    • Assess a high volume of student work evaluating not just the final answer but the handwritten or digitally submitted mathematical steps to pinpoint and provide targeted feedback on conceptual or computational errors
  • Student Monitoring and Support
    • Regularly analyze LMS data and digital math platform analytics such as login frequency module progress time on task and formative assessment scores to monitor student pacing and performance
    • Implement a proactive data driven intervention strategy for students struggling with mathematical concepts falling behind on pacing or showing signs of disengagement
    • Host consistent virtual office hours and provide targeted one on one or small group remediation sessions via video conferencing to guide students through complex problem solving
    • Administer and proctor required state standardized tests and internal math benchmark assessments in a secure online or designated in person testing environment
  • Communication and Professionalism
    • Establish and maintain consistent clear and positive communication with students parents and designated learning coaches via email LMS messaging and phone calls to demystify complex math expectations
    • Maintain accurate and up to date digital records of student attendance grades mathematical progress communication logs and intervention efforts in compliance with state regulations and school policy
    • Participate actively in regular virtual staff meetings professional learning communities PLCs and required professional development sessions to continuously improve online STEM pedagogy

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

  • Minimum of two (2) years of successful teaching experience, preferably in a secondary setting.
  • Proven experience working independently with minimal supervision, including the ability to manage a digital task list and maintain a stable remote (home-office) infrastructure.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience using the Google Workspace suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive) in a professional or academic setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas via written channels (Email, Google Chat, and Document Comments) with high clarity and low ambiguity.
  • Access to a private, secure, high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds.
  • Deep understanding of the recently revised 2024 Iowa Academic Standards for Mathematics with the ability to implement the core instructional shifts of Focus Coherence and Rigor
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the high school mathematics progression specifically translating the Major Work of Algebra 1 Geometry and Algebra 2 into asynchronous digital modules
  • Knowledge of current trends in digital academic dishonesty such as photo solving apps and AI tools and strategies to design math assessments that measure authentic student understanding in a remote setting
  • Advanced proficiency in integrating virtual math tools such as Desmos GeoGebra digital whiteboards and equation editors into a Learning Management System LMS to make abstract concepts visual and interactive
  • Skill in continuously monitoring LMS engagement analytics and formative assessment data to identify students with procedural or conceptual math gaps triggering targeted timely interventions
  • The ability to assess high volumes of student work by evaluating the mathematical steps submitted via digital ink or uploaded photos providing clear recorded video or text feedback to correct specific misconceptions rather than just grading the final answer
  • Exceptional ability to explain complex quantitative concepts clearly through written LMS announcements email and live video sessions
  • Residency in the state of Iowa is required.

Education & Certification Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field.
  • Must hold a valid active Iowa Board of Educational Examiners BOEE teaching license with a grades 5 through 12 Mathematics endorsement such as Endorsement 143 or 1431.
