This position is eligible for telework, which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

Job Summary:

The Security Data Analyst Level I, II, and III provides varying levels of support and analysis, dependent on the level, to the MTA HQ's Office of Security. The Security Data Analyst role involves assisting in the development, collection, and utilization of sensitive police and security data, information, and intelligence datasets. This includes researching, performing analysis, drafting, and/or contributing to reports and presentations, and delivering updates based on their work product within public safety, MTA transit systems, or criminal justice from MTA Police and all operating MTA Security departments.

Key activities include assisting in the development of compiling, validating and analyzing critical information to identify critical security trends, emerging threats and operational vulnerabilities by producing core metrics and security reports devoted to Quality of Life (QOL), crime, customer and employee safety; working with departmental leadership and liaisons on the development of security metrics and reporting; coordinating the preparation and delivery of security submissions; tracking and analyzing security trends for operational development, monthly reporting, and ad hoc analytical projects.

Responsibilities:

Level I:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining queries that combine and transform datasets to support Security and Police analytical needs.
  • Conduct research and assist with drafting analytical products related to Security, Criminal Justice, and Policing topics under guidance.
  • Support the development of reports, dashboards, and visualizations using tools such as Power BI, Report Builder, ArcGIS, and automated reporting systems.
  • Learn and apply data analysis methods, visualization techniques, and security analytics practices.
  • Collaborate with Security team members and analysts to support the creation of analytical reports and operational products.
  • Assist in compiling and organizing analysis from confidential, open-source, police, and security information sources.
  • Support monitoring of security incident data and help identify basic trends while maintaining data quality.

Level II:

  • Develop and maintain queries and data transformations that combine multiple datasets to support Security and Police operational and investigative needs.
  • Conduct research and produce analytical reports related to Security, Criminal Justice, and Policing issues.
  • Design and deliver reports, dashboards, and visualizations using Power BI, Report Builder, ArcGIS, and automated reporting tools for operational and leadership stakeholders.
  • Apply data analysis methods, visualization techniques, and security analytics practices to produce accurate and actionable insights.
  • Collaborate with Security team leads and operational units to develop analytical report products and performance metrics.
  • Produce analytical assessments using confidential, open-source, police, intelligence, and security information sources to support operational planning and decision-making.
  • Analyze and monitor security incident data to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies, and recommend improvements to data collection and data integrity processes.

Level III:

  • Design and develop advanced queries, datasets, and analytical approaches to support complex Security and Police operational and intelligence needs.
  • Conduct advanced research and produce high-level analytical reports related to Security, Criminal Justice, and Policing issues.
  • Develop sophisticated analytical products and visualizations using tools such as Power BI, Report Builder, ArcGIS, and automated reporting platforms.
  • Apply advanced analytical methods and emerging technologies to enhance analytical capabilities and improve reporting effectiveness.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert guiding complex analytical questions or data challenges.
  • Produce comprehensive analytical assessments using confidential, open-source, law enforcement, and security information sources to support operational planning and risk assessment.
  • Perform advanced analysis of security incident data to identify complex patterns, emerging risks, and long-term trends while supporting improvements to data collection and data integrity practices.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Level I:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in or the ability to learn the Microsoft Office Suite or comparable applications, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Required Education and Experience:

Level I:

  • Associate's Degree (AA) in Security, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Management, Statistics, Data Science, Data Engineering, Public Policy, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education from an accredited college and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 1 year of work experience.

Level II:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) in Security, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Management, Statistics, Data Science, Data Engineering, Mathematics, Public Policy or a related field from an accredited college or an equivalent combination of education from an accredited college and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience handling large datasets, including building and structuring datasets.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience developing advanced analytical products and writing database queries.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience merging data and performing QA to identify and resolve data anomalies and errors.

Level III:
