Title:                Security Guard                    
Reports To:    Director of Operations                    
Status:            Full-Time Exempt

 
El Museo del Barrio, founded by a coalition of Puerto Rican educators, artists, and activists, is the nation’s leading Latino and Latin American cultural institution. The Museum welcomes visitors of all backgrounds to discover the artistic landscape of these communities through its extensive Permanent Collection, varied exhibitions and publications, bilingual public programs, educational activities, festivals, and special events. 

SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF ROLE:

Security guards are responsible for patrolling the facility, man a post, provide security presence and enforce the institutions rules and regulations.  The guards will be responsible for working closely with the Security Manager in all facets of security and safety. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greet and interact with visitors, staff, vendors, and members of the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Help maintain a safe and secure environment by following established security procedures and providing excellent customer service.
  • Monitor entrances, exits, galleries, public areas, and other assigned locations.
  • Control access to restricted areas and verify visitor, staff, vendor, and contractor authorization as required.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to visitor questions, complaints, and concerns.
  • Assist with daily attendance, occupancy, and unit counts, as required.
  • Provide security coverage during special events, evening programs, and third-party rentals.
  • Respond to emergencies and provide clear guidance to visitors and staff in accordance with established procedures.
  • Complete accurate daily activity reports, incident reports, and other required security documentation.
  • Report suspicious activity, safety hazards, policy violations, and incidents to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain a neat, professional appearance and demonstrate a friendly, respectful, and professional demeanor.
  • Perform additional security-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION:
 
  • Three to four years of professional security experience preferred.
  • Current New York State Security Guard Registration Card required.
  • Completion of the required 8-Hour Pre-Assignment and 16-Hour On-the-Job Security Guard training courses.
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution required.
  • Current F-01 and F-03 Fire Guard Certificates required or must be obtained within the timeframe established by the organization.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a plus.
  • Strong communication, observation, customer service, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, alert, and professional during emergencies and challenging situations.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with visitors, staff, vendors, and members of the public at all levels.
  • Must be dependable, flexible, and committed to the mission and values of the institution.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, special events, and other schedules based on organizational needs.

 
Hourly Rate: $20
