Security Guard Supervisor Transitional Housing & Drop-In Center
Department: Security/Operations
Reports To: Program Director/Operations Leadership
Location: Yonkers, New York
Employment Status: Full-Time
Salary: $22.50 - $23.50 per hour
Schedule: Three 12-hour shifts per week; 7:00 AM 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM 7:00 AM, based on assigned schedule and program needs
Position Summary
The Security Guard Supervisor provides hands-on security leadership and oversight for a transitional housing and drop-in center serving adult men in Yonkers, New York. The Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, respectful, and orderly environment for residents, drop-in guests, staff, visitors, and vendors.
This is a working supervisor position. The Security Guard Supervisor performs regular security guard duties while also providing direction, oversight, and support to Security Guards assigned to the shift. The Supervisor serves as the primary security point person during the assigned shift and works closely with program, case management, maintenance, and administrative staff.
The ideal candidate is dependable, professional, calm under pressure, experienced in supervising security personnel, and comfortable working with individuals experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable populations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision and shift leadership to Security Guards assigned to the facility.
  • Perform Security Guard duties as necessary to ensure continuous security coverage.
  • Maintain a visible security presence throughout the facility and conduct routine interior and exterior patrols.
  • Monitor entrances, exits, common areas, drop-in areas, residential areas, and other designated locations.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing and security coverage throughout the assigned shift.
  • Conduct shift briefings and communicate relevant incidents, concerns, assignments, and priorities to Security Guards.
  • Ensure proper completion of security logs, incident reports, visitor logs, patrol records, and other required documentation.
  • Review Security Guard reports for accuracy, completeness, and timely submission.
  • Monitor resident, guest, visitor, vendor, and employee access to the facility in accordance with program policies.
  • Respond promptly to disturbances, disputes, emergencies, unauthorized access, safety concerns, and other security-related incidents.
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation and conflict-resolution techniques whenever appropriate.
  • Contact emergency services, law enforcement, fire department, EMS, or program leadership when circumstances require additional assistance.
  • Coordinate security response during medical emergencies, fire alarms, evacuations, building emergencies, and other critical incidents.
  • Immediately notify program leadership of significant incidents or safety concerns in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist program staff in maintaining facility rules while treating residents and drop-in guests with professionalism, dignity, and respect.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ensure Security Guards interact appropriately with residents and guests.
  • Monitor security cameras, alarms, access-control systems, and other security equipment where applicable.
  • Conduct regular checks to identify unsafe conditions, unsecured doors, prohibited activity, or other potential security concerns.
  • Ensure proper shift turnover, including communication of outstanding incidents, safety concerns, resident issues, and operational information to the incoming security team.
  • Address performance, attendance, conduct, or procedural issues involving Security Guards and communicate concerns to management.
  • Assist with training and orientation of new Security Guards.
  • Ensure Security Guards comply with organizational policies, post orders, emergency procedures, and applicable New York State security requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding residents, guests, employees, incidents, and program operations.
  • Complete additional security and operational duties as assigned by program leadership.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Security Guard Supervisor is expected to:
  • Provide day-to-day direction to Security Guards assigned to the shift.
  • Assign posts, patrol responsibilities, breaks, and other security duties.
  • Confirm that assigned security posts remain appropriately covered.
  • Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, appearance, professionalism, and job performance.
  • Provide coaching and corrective direction when necessary.
  • Escalate significant employee performance or disciplinary concerns to program management.
  • Ensure staff understand and follow emergency-response and incident-reporting procedures.
  • Promote teamwork and professional communication among security, program, case management, maintenance, and administrative staff.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid New York State Security Guard Registration Card required.
  • Completion of all New York State-mandated Security Guard training requirements.
  • Previous security experience required; supervisory or lead security experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in homeless shelters, transitional housing, supportive housing, social-service programs, residential facilities, hospitals, behavioral-health settings, or similar environments preferred.
  • Knowledge of security procedures, emergency response, incident reporting, and conflict de-escalation.
  • Ability to supervise staff while also functioning as an active member of the security team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with residents, guests, employees, management, emergency responders, and outside agencies.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and timely written incident reports.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during emergencies and challenging situations.
  • Basic computer and electronic-reporting skills preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during a 12-hour shift.
  • Ability to conduct regular interior and exterior patrols.
  • Ability to respond quickly to security incidents and emergencies.
  • Ability to navigate stairs and different areas of the facility as required.
  • Ability to work overnight, weekends, and holidays based on assigned schedule and operational needs.
Work Schedule
Security Guard Supervisors are generally assigned to one of two 12-hour shifts:
Day Shift: 7:00 AM 7:00 PM
Night Shift: 7:00 PM 7:00 AM
The regular schedule consists of three assigned 12-hour shifts per week, subject to operational requirements and coverage needs.
Because the facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Security Guard Supervisors must be dependable and prepared to work their assigned schedule, including weekends and holidays when scheduled.
