GREATER NEW BEDFORD REGIONAL VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

School Year Position -Works 202 days

Position Purpose:

This position provides support and day-to-day assistance to the Assistant Principals in the administration of building security and monitoring and resolving student behavior at the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational High School. This position has access to confidential information concerning visitors, students, and employees.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitor building access and activity to ensure student safety by monitoring building access and activities and student behavior.
  • De-escalate student- to-student conflict
  • Assist in or performs student search, when applicable.
  • Assist teachers with student behavior on an as-needed basis.
  • Patrols interior points of entrance/exit, passageways, common areas including restrooms, instructional areas, gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria and assembly areas as assigned
  • Oversees building access for students and employee using registration (sign-in/-out), identification badge assignment, controlled access areas and passage routes throughout the facility.
  • Provides directions as needed as well as information regarding visitation policies and protocols to all authorized vendors and/or external contractors.
  • Monitors student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events
  • (e.g. lunch room, classrooms, detention, dances, home games, 'time outs,' etc.) for the
  • purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe
  • and positive learning environment, and secure facility.
  • Controls and diffuses disturbances before, during and after school hours, within school buildings, upon school grounds and along access and egress routes.
  • Assists school resource (police) officers, local police and fire safety officers as necessary
  • Assist facility personnel and outside security staff.
  • Monitor security video surveillance or security software systems.
  • May transport students to crisis center or work with crisis counsels.
  • Maintains logs, prepares reports and/or other documentation related to security and/or safety.
  • Investigates student conflicts and conducts student mediation or other restorative actions.
  • Restrain students in accordance with appropriate restraint techniques.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:

High School Degree required or GED. Degree in related field, preferred. Experience working with youth in an organized setting with school safety, law enforcement, or security work experience preferred.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Proficient in computer skills, Microsoft Suite, public address systems, and general office equipment. General knowledge about security procedures in a school setting.

Ability: Ability to maintain confidential information concerning employees and students. Must demonstrate good judgment and work independently. Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students. Ability to plan, organize and collaborate with others, ability to communicate effectively, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all school employees, students, teachers, parents, and vendors, ability to recognize school-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment, ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions, occasionally under time pressure, ability to operate a computer and be proficient in the use of MS Office applications and various employee and student database systems.

Skills: Excellent customer service, organization skills and time-management skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and good computer skills.

This position is frequently required to sit, communicate, or hear; occasionally required to walk, must be able to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges. This position requires the ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed.

Supervision:

Supervision Scope: Performs routine duties that are clearly defined by protocol and standard operating procedures with little supervision.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of Assistant Principals.

Job Environment:

Work is performed under typical office/school conditions; environment is moderately noisy.

Operates a computer, telephone, and walkie-talkie.

Interacts with other school staff, teachers, students, parents, and vendors.

Has access to school-related confidential and/or sensitive information including student records, the disclosure of which would cause a significant breach of trust and seriously damage the reputation of the school.

Errors in judgment could result in hardship to the students and the school, lower standards of service to the community, monetary loss or legal repercussions and possible negative public relations for both.
