About the role

Be a Steady Presence When It Matters Most

Join Bethel’s Office of Safety & Security as a Staff Security Officer and help create a campus where students, faculty, staff, and guests feel safe, welcomed, and cared for, even in the overnight hours. Working midnight to 8 a.m., Wednesday through Sunday, you’ll be a trusted presence on campus during a time when your attentiveness, judgment, and quick response can make a meaningful difference.

This is more than a security role. As part of Bethel’s Christ-centered community, you’ll help create an environment where students can rest, learn, and thrive. You’ll patrol campus, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, assist community members, and work alongside campus partners to address concerns and maintain a safe environment.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year position. Because safety is a 24/7 priority, flexibility in working hours is required, including weekends and some holidays.

The pay rate for this in-person role is $23.93 per hour.

What you'll do

Campus Patrol and Enforcement and Incident Response Reporting

  • Proactively patrol University campuses to maintain a visible and reassuring safety presence, while enforcing university policies.
  • Respond to and appropriately handle both emergency and non-emergency calls or incidents, including medical emergencies, fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents, and community assistance (escorts, vehicle assists, lockouts)
  • Conduct security interviews and utilize quick decision-making skills and sound judgment in accordance with Bethel University policies and State statutes. Request assistance from external emergency services (law enforcement, fire department, EMS) as necessary.
  • Maintain clear and proper radio traffic, keeping dispatchers and supervisors informed, and write detailed, accurate electronic incident reports.

Emergency Preparedness and Compliance &Safety, Traffic, and Event Management

  • Maintain constant readiness to respond to campus emergencies effectively and stay updated on university policies, procedures, and relevant state statutes.
  • Successfully complete specialized training, including a 40-hour behavior detection class (SIRA®), use of force, defensive tactics, and basic first aid/CPR.
  • Conduct periodic safety and fire inspections as assigned by leadership.
  • Issue parking violation tickets and provide active traffic direction during peak times or events.
  • Set up and tear down safety signs, cones, and barricades for campus events.
  • Provide high-quality, friendly service to campus guests and community members at all times.
  • Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors with safety concerns, directions, and general inquiries.

Qualifications

Required Education & Certifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Must be currently First Aid/CPR certified, or have the ability to obtain certification immediately upon beginning employment.
  • Must be Baton, Repuls, and Handcuff certified, or have the ability to obtain certification immediately upon beginning employment.

  • Teamwork: A proven track record of working effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to effectively perform duties, including a timely and active physical response to emergency situations.

Work Environment:

This job operates both indoor and outdoor year round. This role also uses university vehicles, at times, to parole the campus.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have good vision with the ability to adjust focus, ability to hear and distinguish sounds. The job requires traversing the Bethel Campus on a regular basis. This role can require bending, reaching, and climbing and lifting up to 15 lbs. This job requires stamina and endurance with the ability to stay alert and physically active through extended or overnight shifts without getting easily fatigued. Expected Hours of Work:

Typically, days and hours of work are Wednesday through Sunday, midnight to 8 a.m., with the expectation to work specific schedules and hours as identified and communicated by management. Day, evening, weekend and holiday work can be required as job duties demand to cover other shifts due to vacation, etc.. This is a 40 hour per week, 12 months per year position.
