Position Overview:

Leads and directs security operations for an assigned shift or facility. Provides operational supervision, guidance, and accountability for security officers and daily security activities. Serves as the primary security authority for the assigned shift or location, ensuring effective coverage, incident response, and alignment with departmental standards. Fulfills all lower level security officer functions while providing direct leadership, staff coordination, and operational oversight.

This role retains all core operational responsibilities of the lower level security officer positions, including but not limited to site security, emergent situations, incident reporting, customer services, investigations, training, and security officer functions within acute care environments. Builds upon these foundational duties by providing direct leadership, operational oversight, and accountability for security staff assigned to a shift or facility.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• SITE SECURITY

• Performs all lower level security officer site security duties.
• Provides guidance and direction to lower level security officer to ensure consistent execution of site security protocols.
• Ensures security coverage and operational readiness across the assigned shift or facility.
• Verifies completion of security rounds, inspections, and post checks by assigned officers during each shift.

EMERGENT SITUATIONS

• Performs all lower level security officer emergent response duties. 
• Assumes on-scene command during emergency situations, directing security staff and coordinating with responding personnel until relieved by a supervisor or manager.
• Coordinates security emergency response efforts with clinical leadership, nursing supervisors, and administrative personnel to ensure integrated incident management.

         

INCIDENT REPORTING

• Performs all lower level security officer incident reporting duties.
• Ensures all security staff on assigned shift or facility complete required reports accurately and on time.
• Reviews and approves incident reports prior to submission to supervisor or manager.
• Prepares and submits end-of-shift summary reports to the supervisor or manager, including incident activity, staffing status, outstanding issues, and follow-up actions.

• CUSTOMER SERVICE:

• Performs all lower level security officer customer service duties.
• Models professional communication and service excellence for security officers.
• Ensures consistent delivery of customer service standards across all security officers on assigned shift or facility.

SECURITY OFFICERS ASSIGNED TO ACUTE FACILITIES:

• Performs all lower level security officer acute care duties.
• Operates and/or oversees weapons detection and visitor management systems.
• Coordinates with nursing and clinical staff to manage security coverage for high-risk patients, including behavioral health holds and 1:1 patient watch assignments.

INVESTIGATION AND INVESTIGATIVE RESEARCH:

• Performs all lower level security officer investigative duties.

• TRAINING & FIELD TRAINING (FTO) RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Acts as the senior security officer on duty, serving as the primary point of contact and on-site authority for security operations during assigned shifts.
• Provides and oversees field training and evaluation of new and junior security officers, ensuring competency in core security functions, policies, and procedures.
• Completes standardized training evaluation documentation for all officers under field training, including daily observation reports and competency assessments.
• Trains and mentors security officers and hospital staff on security awareness, emergency procedures, and de-escalation techniques.
• Serves as a positive role model for security officers, demonstrating professionalism, ethical conduct, and adherence to departmental standards at all times.
• Coordinates onboarding and orientation of new security personnel with the supervisor or manager.
• Ensures continuity of security operations during shift transitions, briefings, and personnel changes.

• LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Leads and directs security staff assigned to a shift or facility, ensuring effective coverage, coordination, and operational readiness.
• Ensures all security equipment (radios, cameras, access control systems) is operational and properly assigned at the start of each shift.
• Serves as the primary security authority for the assigned shift or facility, accountable for staff performance, incident response, and operational outcomes.
• Conducts daily shift huddles and ensures clear communication of priorities, post assignments, and operational updates.
• Provides real-time coaching, mentoring, and initial corrective guidance to officers during shift operations.
• Schedules security officers and manages daily staffing to ensure adequate coverage.
• Ensures security officer post orders are current, relevant, understood, comprehensive, compliant, and operationally useful.
• Assists with interviews and provides input for officer performance evaluations.
• Reports to manager any breach of policy.
• Organizes security and leads teams at special events.
• Serves as the primary security liaison with nursing, facilities, and administrative staff during assigned shift.

• SUPPORT PROTECTIVE SERVICES INITIATIVES:

• Contributes to compliance with federal and state security regulations including Joint Commission, CMS, HIPAA, and workplace violence prevention laws.
• Monitors tracking and quality control tools.
• Leads investigations and ensures appropriate follow-up actions are completed.
• Implements findings from investigations to improve operational processes and reduce risk on assigned shift or facility.

EDUCATION:

HS Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)


CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

PSO - Proprietary Private Security Officer

REGULATORY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS (CALIFORNIA BSIS) to be verified by manager:

• 8 hours Power to Arrest and Use of Force.
• 16 hours within 30 days
• 16 hours within 6 months
• Total 40 hours initial training
• 8 hours annual refresher

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
4 years recent relevant experience


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

• Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to direct, train, mentor, and evaluate staff.
• Demonstrated advanced de-escalation and crisis intervention skills, including the ability to coach and direct officers during active crisis situations.
• Ability to support operational decision-making and provide guidance in dynamic environments.
• Ability to interpret policy and ensure consistent application across security operations.
• Working knowledge of healthcare operations and how security functions integrate with clinical workflows, patient care, and regulatory requirements.

Pay Range is $29.13 to $40.78 / hour

The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is only one component of Sutter Health’s comprehensive total rewards program. Eligible positions also include a comprehensive benefits package.
