Job Summary
The University Security Officer is responsible for safeguarding the well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors by maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. This role includes patrolling university grounds, responding to incidents, enforcing institutional policies, and coordinating with local law enforcement when necessary. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong communication skills, sound judgment, a high level of accountability, and the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure. This position may require on¿call assignments, overtime, and work during weekends, nights, holidays, and rotating shifts to ensure continuous campus safety operations.
Responsibilities
Conduct regular patrols of campus on foot, by bicycle, and by vehicle to promote a safe and secure environment, reporting any unsafe conditions to on¿duty law enforcement personnel.
Monitor security cameras, alarm systems, and related technology to quickly identify and respond to suspicious or unsafe activities.
Inspect buildings and facilities to ensure doors, windows, gates, and other access points are properly secured.
Lock and unlock campus buildings as scheduled or as needed for university operations.
Respond promptly and professionally to emergency situations, including medical emergencies, fires, alarms, disturbances, and security breaches.
Perform rescue and emergency functions during accidents, critical incidents, and disasters, including: Directing traffic for extended periods Administering basic emergency medical aid Lifting, carrying, or dragging individuals from dangerous situations Coordinating or assisting with evacuations and scene security
Prepare clear, detailed incident reports and maintain accurate and complete records of all safety and security activities.
Enforce university policies, procedures, and regulations consistently and impartially.
Investigate and document incidents involving potential criminal acts, policy violations, misconduct, or suspicious behavior, and collaborate with law enforcement as required.
Build and maintain positive, service¿oriented relationships with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to support a welcoming and safe campus environment.
Participate in safety education and awareness programs, providing information on crime prevention and personal safety.
Offer assistance, guidance, and general support to individuals in need, helping foster a strong sense of community.
Maintain accurate daily activity logs, including shift summaries, patrol observations, and incident documentation.
Fulfill all responsibilities designated for Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under the Clery Act, including proper reporting of qualifying incidents.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support campus safety and security operations.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must successfully pass a background check demonstrating no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal conduct.
Possession of a valid Georgia driver¿s license.
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years of related experience or a combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Strong observational abilities and effective problem¿solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage professionally with the campus community.
Ability to remain calm, composed, and effective when handling stressful or high¿pressure situations.
Proficiency with computer systems for report writing, monitoring security technologies, and carrying out general administrative tasks.
Maintains strong situational awareness and remains alert to potential safety or security concerns at all times.
Demonstrates effective customer service skills and a welcoming, service¿oriented approach.
Working knowledge of basic safety principles, crime¿prevention practices, customer service standards, and fundamental fire¿prevention methods.
