Description

HAC, Inc., an employee-owned grocery retail organization, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Accountant to lead key accounting functions and ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting.

This role is responsible for owning complex accounting areas, leading the month-end close process, and serving as a strategic partner to operations and cross-functional teams. The Senior Accountant will drive process improvements, strengthen internal controls, and provide financial insight across a multi-location retail environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Close & General Ledger Leadership
  • Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
  • Prepare, review, and approve journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
  • Ensure all financial reporting is accurate and compliant with GAAP
  • Review staff-level work for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies proactively
Account Reconciliations & Oversight
  • Oversee and ensure completion of all balance sheet reconciliations, including:
    • Bank reconciliations
    • Accounts payable and receivable
    • Inventory and accrual accounts
  • Investigate and resolve complex reconciling items
  • Establish and enforce reconciliation standards and deadlines
Inventory, Fixed Assets & Retail Accounting
  • Lead inventory accounting processes, including shrink, adjustments, and valuation
  • Oversee calculation and reconciliation of inventory balances across store locations
  • Manage fixed assets and Construction-in-Progress (CIP), including:
    • Capitalization policies
    • Depreciation
    • Asset tracking and system reconciliation
  • Partner with operations to ensure accurate financial representation of store activity
Payroll, Vendor & Contractual Accounting
  • Oversee payroll accounting in partnership with HR and Treasury
  • Review payroll journal entries and reconciliations
  • Manage accruals and reconciliations related to:
    • Vendor payments
    • Landlord agreements
    • Rebates and receivables
  • Ensure contractual obligations are accurately reflected in financials
Financial Analysis & Business Partnership
  • Perform variance analysis and provide insights to leadership
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
  • Partner with store leadership and operations teams to improve financial performance
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports and analysis
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
  • Serve as a primary liaison for external auditors
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements
  • Strengthen internal controls and identify areas of risk
  • Lead documentation and process standardization efforts
Process Improvement & Leadership
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes
  • Lead initiatives to transition from manual to automated systems
  • Develop and implement best practices across accounting functions
  • Mentor and support staff accountants and junior team members
  • Provide recommendations to leadership on financial strategy and controls
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 4–7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Advanced Excel skills (complex formulas, data analysis; macros preferred)
  • Experience leading month-end close and reconciliations
Preferred
  • CPA or CPA-eligible
  • Experience in grocery, retail, or multi-unit operations
  • Experience with inventory and fixed asset accounting
  • ERP system experience
