Overview:

This is your opportunity to grow! Building & Earth Sciences, LLC. is a growing Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Materials Testing firm located in Birmingham, AL. We have 17 Branch Office locations throughout the Southeast, two of which were added just this past year.  The Accounting Department needs a Senior Accountant to help manage our increase in business.

 

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and at least 5 years of experience, and must be willing to work in the office in our Birmingham Corporate Office located in the Irondale area. This individual will be groomed to take the place of our current Controller, who will retire in less than 3 years.

Responsibilities:

Duties of the Position

  • Assists Controller in maintaining a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Protects company assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls and segregation of duties
  • Monitors potential liabilities and informs management of corrective action needed.
  • Assists Controller with the accounting of branch operations, control systems, and transaction processing operations.
  • Works with company peers to ensure their understanding and compliance with financial policies.
  • Works within current and future electronic financial systems and helps ensure system integrity.
  • Assists with daily and monthly cash and bank reconciliations as required.
  • Assists with periodic billing and assists in collection of Accounts Receivable as required.
  • Assists with Accounts Payable to ensure liabilities are paid in a timely manner and properly recognized in the appropriate accounting period.
  • Assists with bi-weekly payroll processing as required.
  • Assists with maintaining an orderly accounting file system and appropriate records.
  • Assists Controller to ensure that all balance sheet accounts are reconciled on a periodic basis and any adjustments are processed timely.
  • Assists Controller in issuing timely and complete financial statements.
  • Assists Controller with the preparation of the annual financial statements and tax returns with external accountants.
  • Assists Controller with company financial management reports and analysis of key metrics.
  • Assists Controller and branch management in the production and analysis of periodic budgets and forecasts.
  • Assists Controller in providing financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Assists Controller with compliance with federal, state, and local taxation and legal requirements
Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Competencies)
• Demonstrated knowledge of applied leadership skills, abilities and best practices.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a thorough knowledge of business English, spelling, arithmetic and vocabulary. Communications must be open and honest in keeping with Building & Earth open communication philosophy.
• Ability to create accounting data and tables for presentations to management team.
• Ability to create and maintain accurate and confidential records and data and to prepare easily understandable reports for distribution.
• Ability to organize, coordinate and prioritize tasks and schedules.
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, clients and client representatives and the general public with a focus on maintaining a Customer/Client focus at all times.
• Ability to dress, speak and act professionally & appropriately.
• Ability to deal with stressful situations, multiple priorities and hectic schedules calmly and courteously.
• Skilled in the use of computers and common software applications, including ability to learn company specific software applications.
• Skilled in financial management and problem solving/analysis.
• Ability to work ethically, honestly and safely at all times.

 

Physical Requirements
1. Must be able to work, move, or carry objects or materials up to 20 lbs.
2. Visual/hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written/verbal communications in the English language, including the ability to communicate directly and over the telephone and be understood.

 

Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience
• College degree in accounting.
• Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office or other spreadsheet software.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in related field, at least 8 years preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of Excel or other related spreadsheet software.

 

Special Requirements
1. Possession of a completed BS or MS degree in accounting from an accredited college or university.
2. Possession of a valid state of residence driver’s license.
3. Ability to be insured under all applicable Corporation insurance policies.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This position is a full-time placement with work attendance in the Birmingham headquarters building.

 

Travel
Frequent or periodic travel is not likely in this position.
