Arkansas Talent Group is seeking a Senior Accounting Consultant to lead a comprehensive financial cleanup and process improvement initiative for a large, established trucking company.

Role Overview

This consulting engagement will focus on cleaning up historical financials, tightening internal controls, and streamlining accounting workflows specific to the transportation and trucking environment. The engagement is project-based (not a permanent hire) and is expected to last up to 6 months, with a clear mandate to leave behind accurate, reliable financial and sustainable processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct a thorough review and cleanup of historical financial statements, including revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, and equity accounts.
  • Reconcile key balance sheet accounts (bank, credit card, loans, fixed assets, payroll, fuel, insurance, and other trucking-related costs).
  • Identify misclassified, duplicated, or missing transactions and propose/execute appropriate correcting entries.
  • Evaluate and redesign the chart of accounts to better reflect the economics of a trucking operation (e.g., fuel, maintenance, equipment leases, driver compensation, and lane profitability).
  • Assess existing internal controls and implement stronger controls around cash management, approvals, purchasing, payroll, and driver settlements.
  • Map and document end-to-end accounting processes, then streamline and standardize workflows for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Partner with leadership and external CPA/tax advisors to ensure books are tax-ready and aligned with compliance requirements.
  • Develop KPI and financial reporting dashboards to give management better insight into margin, cost per mile, equipment utilization, and overall profitability.
  • Train internal accounting and operations staff on improved processes, controls, and reporting tools to ensure long-term sustainability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Significant experience (typically 7+ years) in accounting, with prior work as a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, Controller, or Senior Accounting Consultant.
  • Prior experience supporting transportation, logistics, or trucking companies strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record leading accounting cleanup projects, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial restatements.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls design and implementation.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar), with the ability to quickly learn and optimize the client's current platform.
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large data sets.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial topics to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Consulting mindset: comfortable with a time-bound engagement, clear deliverables, and working independently with limited oversight.

Engagement Details

  • Structure: Pure consulting engagement; this is not a permanent employment role.
  • Duration: Up to 6 months, with defined milestones and deliverables.
  • Focus: Delivering clean, reliable financials, stronger controls, and more efficient accounting processes tailored to a large trucking operation.
