The Operational Risk Management (ORM) function within SRM plays a critical role in ensuring that GM's key operational controls are effective, well-understood, and continuously improved.Role DetailsThis is an exciting opportunity to serve as GM's front-line risk-controls professional supporting the deployment and improvement of Control Self-Assessments (CSAs) within the Global Product Development (GPD) organization, with a primary focus on product safety. In this role, you will work directly with senior safety leaders across GM to evaluate the effectiveness of controls tied to GM's six Product Safety Principles — helping ensure that GM's safety frameworks continually enhance our safety culture to create vehicles and products that our customers can trust.You will leverage GM's Strategic Tool for Audit, Risk & Controls (STAR) platform and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders in Safety, Engineering, Quality, and Legal to deploy, monitor, and refine CSA processes that provide measurable assurance on the health of GM's safety controls. This role offers significant visibility with senior leaders, direct impact on GM's safety culture, and the opportunity to innovate within an evolving risk management program.What You'll Do (Responsibilities)Deploy and manage Control Self-Assessments (CSAs) through the STAR tool for Product Safety Principles (PSP) 1–6 within the GPD organization, ensuring timely and accurate assessment of safety-critical controls across engineering and product development business unitsMaintain and update the GPD ORM Library, including CSA questions, risk linkages, and supporting control documentation using Fast Map templates and associated desk proceduresIdentify and validate CSA assignees by collaborating with Safety leadership and SMEs to ensure the right leaders are assessed on the right controls, supported by data-driven candidate selection processesConduct validation reviews of completed CSAs, assessing the adequacy of rationale, evidence, and alignment with Product Safety Principle requirementsManage action plans resulting from ineffective CSA findings, collaborating with business partners and SMEs to develop corrective actions, track resolution timelines, and ensure closed-loop remediationPresent ORM Plan status, CSA deployment progress, identified control deficiencies, and open action plans at quarterly Safety Process Improvement (SPI) meetings and Pre-Disclosure meetings with senior safety leadershipDevelop, propose, and pilot new techniques to improve the CSA process — making it more targeted, better aligned with GM's known enterprise and business risks and audit results, building measurable mitigations to lower GM's risk exposureCross-train and support Strategic Risk Management initiatives, developing risk materials that will be shown at the highest levels of the company, including the board of directorsDevelop and deliver risk products, including trend analyses, controls effectiveness reporting, and process improvement recommendations to support the evolution of the ORM and SRM programsRequired Qualifications4+ years of professional experience in automotive engineering, finance, audit, or risk/controls managementBachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, Engineering, or a related disciplineDemonstrated ability to independently plan, execute, and report on controls assessments or audit engagements with minimal guidanceExperience building and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships with senior leaders, including the ability to present findings and recommendations clearly to executive audiencesStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to evaluate diverse information, identify control gaps, and propose practical, data-supported solutionsProficiency with data management, reporting, and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Glean, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, or similar platforms.Preferred QualificationsExperience with, or willingness to learn, governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) platforms (e.g., IBM OpenPages / STAR or similar tools)Strong conviction for product safety, knowledge of the product development processes, vehicle safety regulations, and GM's Product Safety PrinciplesExperience deploying, assessing, or managing controls programs in a corporate environmentDemonstrated ability to develop and implement process improvements that increase efficiency and effectiveness of risk programsExperience with AI tools, automation, or advanced analytics to enhance risk assessment or reporting processesWhy Apply?Direct impact on safety : Your work will help ensure GM lives up to its foundational commitment to vehicle safety — a commitment that affects millions of customers worldwideVisibility with senior leadership : You will regularly interact with VP-level leaders across Safety, Engineering, Quality, and Legal, presenting risk insights that inform enterprise-level decisionsInnovation opportunity : You will have the latitude to propose and pilot new approaches to controls assessment, leveraging emerging tools including AI, dashboards, and advanced analyticsCareer growth within Corporate Strategy : SRM offers a dynamic environment with exposure to enterprise risk, strategic planning, corporate development, and compliance — providing a strong platform for career progression across GMLocation: Hybrid.
